  • Web Pages and search engines

Sad git I am I've got a web page. About six months ago I did a search for it and was rather surprised that it came either at the top or close to the top. The other day someone was asking about web pages so I did the same search and got sod all.
The full link is here http://www.shef.ac.uk/misc/personal/cs1jg/index.html

Now orginally I did a search for "Sheffield Weather Page" which did the trick. Now if I do that for example under www.google.co.uk I get nothing. If I search for Sheffield Weather without the quotes it comes up sixth. If I search for Sheffield Weather Page without the quotes I can only find a indirect link.

So my question is how do I make my homepage come up more easily in the search engine?????

I believe google is hit based so the more hits your site gets the higher on the list it is.

No, google is not hit based. First order, it is link based. They have a very good description of their setup <A HREF="http://www.google.com/technology/index.html">here</A>.

PageRank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page's value. In essence, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. But, Google looks at more than the sheer volume of votes, or links a page receives; it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves "important" weigh more heavily and help to make other pages "important."

That's what google says. Oh well, I guess I mis-understood the firs time I read that a few weeks ago.

It's one of the many reasons I like google. It's very hard to cheat rank on google, and the few times that it has happened they've been able to tweak their methods to eliminate the weakness.

Google Bombs? Sites that link to other sites linking to other sites linking to one site linking to other sites... forming kind of a ring - if I understood it correctly. Will make your google ranking skyrocket

                1. Google bombs require tons of real sites cooperating to pull off.

                2. Google's already tweaked them down after the Cult of Scientology tried to manipulate them.

Hmm... if the number of links plays a role... how about having the url in his sig? It will be found on many many html docs, if these forums aren't set to be ignored by spiders... ?
Forgive me if this is nonsense (and explain to me why please ) for I should've gone to bed sonme hours ago

It would be a lot of pages, but all on the same site. Not a very good score that way.

This actually works guys. I used to run a site and had a link to it in my sig on another message board saying something like "game_name strategy guide". It was quite a busy message board and I had well over 1000 posts there all with the sig. Then once, I was really bored and decided to do a quick search for the "game_name strategy guide" to see whether there were any other strategy guides that I could compare to mine... and guess what? My page was the 1st link found. hehe...
Someday, we'll look back on this, laugh nervously and change the subject.

                          submit the site...

Why do you guys make it so difficult ?

If you click on "jobs, press, cool stuf, ...", there is a link permitting you to submit your site :

                              It doesn't ?
I just tried it, and it still seems to work...

                              go to www.google.com
click on "Jobs, Press, Cool stuff, ..."
on the right hand side (yellow section: "for site owners"), 4th link : "submitting your site".
