    IDE cable question

    Hi everyone
    I’ve a small query: If I use an 80 wire cable with an ATA/100 HDD on an Intel 440zx motherboard (which only supports ATA/33) will I get any performance improvement over a standard 40 wire cable? I know that the HDD in this case would work at ATA/33, but since this 80 wire cable has better data transmission characteristics that a regular 40 wire one, would it make any difference?

          but then again it could be construded that in high noise enviroments it could possibly.

            Greebe: I would definitely like to test out both and see the results for myself, but I don't have the 80 wire cable, and I believe it's not very cheap, or is it?

              only a few dollars here... even cheap MB's come with two these days

                Hmm....I'll check out the prices here. Even if it doesn't improve performance, alleast it won't <i>decrease</i> it. So, if the cable is cheap here,I guess I've nothing to lose!!

                  A lot of resellers will gauge on the 80-wire cable, but you can find them for honest prices here & there.

                  I really really doubt you'll see the difference with that IDE setup, though. Unless you have your computer running with its case off in the middle of a vacuum and hairdryer testing facility.
                  Gigabyte P35-DS3L with a Q6600, 2GB Kingston HyperX (after *3* bad pairs of Crucial Ballistix 1066), Galaxy 8800GT 512MB, SB X-Fi, some drives, and a Dell 2005fpw. Running WinXP.

                    Actually, I also have always doubted whether an 80 wire cable would make any difference for a setup like mine, but recently I read somewhere in an ad for an 80 wire cable that it can improve performance somewhat on ATA/33 systems because of its better data transmission characteristics. Looks like sales speak!!

                      One thing to remember:
                      If your HDD is stupid (my quantum was) it will detect the 80 pin wire and try to transmit at UDMA66 or more and then things become reallyt funny
                      If there's artificial intelligence, there's bound to be some artificial stupidity.

                        I finally got my new Samsung 40 GB HDD, and now I'm dual booting with Win XP and Red Hat 7.2
                        Technoid: Heh, heh, now that would be a funny situation!! Thankfully, I didn't buy an 80 pin cable. But I guess such a problem would be solved by using the SetUDMA tool available for most HDDs!!
