Getting XP to boot after re-installing Win2000

I killed win2000 by being stupid so I had to format and re-install. Now XP was on another drive but we couldn't find a way via the recovery console to get the darn thing to boot.
In the end I re-installed over the top of XP and did it that way but there must be way.
Tried fixboot, fixmbr and configuring the boot menu but it kept trying to run win2k after selecting it from the boot menu. After re-installing the boot.ini was the same but of course worked happily.

Hi there!

If you have WinXP already on your computer and you want to install Win2000 for a dual-boot system, you have to do it like this:

1. After installing WinXP, install Win2000 to a different partition
on your hard drive.

2. After installing Win2000, start it by selecting it on a boot
menu.

3. Put your WinXP CD to your CD drive and copy the NTLDR and
NTdetect.com files from the I386 folder to the root of the
system drive (C).

Now you should be able to start both operating systems via boot menu.
