  • need help with Aol crap...

I have to use AOl at present.. not by choice. I want to use it without the application. Can someone point me to a read me text file for setting this up? i cant stand having the aol application open sucking the life outta me. Can i change something in Dial up network to change it?

No. They have it pretty much locked up.

You might be able to run Explorer while it's open, but you'll ge be going back to AOL's control panel every few minutes to disable disconnects and the email only works from the app.

    Sux.

I think AOL would get more customers if they did give an option to run without all there crap that they serve up. The worst thing about AOL is that it tends to break dialup connections. It's probably the third most common complaint to our helpdesk.

It uses its own AOL Adapter in Network Configuration and it messes with the TCP/IP stack, so it seems to me that they are actually going out of their way to make it so that you can't use anything else besides their software.

At my job, if someone calls in about AOL, we say, "why is AOl on your computer. Take that POS off right now!"

You know, people are always griping about being signed off AOL, but I never seem to have that problem. I'm using a tiny proggy called momo's anti-idle 2.3, and it takes care of keeping those messages away. The other part is that I have decent wiring in my house and a USR Courier v.everything modem. I will stay online for 2 days straight sometimes. No biggie.

I really do need to get broadband, though.. but there are at least as many horror stories there. The leading ISP in my town supposedly has good service, though they are overpriced, and when I went to a friend's house and connected though his router (he uses this ISP), I went into my news server and a few days afterward discovered that someone from the local university had accessed my account! Needless to say, I don't trust that ISP.

The other thing I don't understand is why AOL mail gets the bad rap it does. Here's why I prefer it.. I can ignore all those virus warnings for people who use Outlook Express, I can have 7 "screen names," all of which are counted as a "permanent email address" for purposes of signing up certain places, and I can dump the screen name and email at will. I have one screen name address I give out, which collects all my spam for me (at least most of it) so no worries there. AOL techies may be dumb as posts, but I have never really had to bother with them in the 7 years I've been online. Yes, they have their shortcomings, and I don't really trust them, but hey.. I have two very good local teenage female friends now that I wouldn't have had if I was using one of those geek-approved ISPs, so I suppose things can't be all bad, either.
