Too me, it's a major Reliabilty/Quality issue. I can't see selling parts that sponaneously combust if the heatsink gets bumped a little or not installed properly. What efforts does AMD put into thermal dissipation??? None, nothing...zero!!!!
Do they even sell them with a stock Heatsink so people don't have to take chances????

Just look through HardOCP forum and see how many "I fried my Athlon, Dude!!!" threads there are.

I wouldn't want to use anything that unreliable in any critical system.

That's what I do believe they run the shuttle on due to quality concerns.

Everyone and their brother (including a mass majority of Mom&Pop shop techs) don't have the slightest clue as to properly cool them... especially these freaks that think OCing is a no brainer... tho it is close to it these days. Proof that not all should be playing with fire.

I think a lot of folks think OC'ing works in all situations, but it doesn't. If you have hardware that has very specific timing requirements, such as a video editing board, overclocking can create nightmares beyond belief if the overclock is done using the clock instead of the multiplier and there isn't a proper PCI divider present. Same goes for some RAID and audio cards.

I agree with you on OC'ing being easy... too easy... just like anything computer related today. The average consumer know's nothing of any importance when it comes to hardware.

Like the other day I had a lady come into the shop looking for a book on how to fix pc's for Dummies - not for as she put it "to learn more about what a computer is composed of"... but so she could fix her friends computers better. Then right after that she asked me for my opinion on a very very easy to use point and click home design software program because "she doesn't know how to use a computer, she just fixes them"

The only thing I can say is thank god for people who think they know what they are doing... because machines now, if they are set up properly to begin with and "not *****d around with by people with pseudo knowledge" can generally go for a year or two without any kinda maintenace.

Those people generate business which is ok by me as long as they don't try to discredit the work I do to fix their mistakes.

I think alot of this has to do to some moron that isnt careful when putting on a heatsink. I never had a heat sink come off a CPU on me..Intel or AMD.

Also AMD Does sells retail CPUs with a heatsink.

As for HardOCP...most of the poster are your 16-18 year old punks that don't have a clue to what they are doing or its the first time putting together a computer. Mistakes are to made when you first start out....just that AMD doesnt offer the same coushin for error that Intel might offer when it comes to mounting a CPU HS to a CPU.

Not quite..... There is a certain degree of Radiation Hardness inherent in the older Processor designs eg. 386, 486 and early pentiums that you don't have in the newer Processors.

Anyway, don't take generalizations too seriously, and face it, there are a lot more 16-18 year old people who DON'T know what they are doing compared to those who do.
