    Taz:

    Then try opera...
Faster, safer and smarter than default browsers. Fully-featured for privacy, security, and so much more. Get the faster, better Opera browser for free.

The trialversion is adware (banner on top of the application), but the download is... 3.4 MB (11 MB for the download with Java run-time included).

The browser has a very good download manager, fully customizable (multiple document interface can be chosen), quick settings (e.g. no popup windows, cookies, ... through 1 keypress).

Main disadvantage: some websited do not recognize it as an advanced browser, and can therefor not be viewed correctly... oh, and : not free...

I'm using ns7pr1 now to post this, it is very very similar to mozilla 1 candidate releases.

The plugin integration in Netscape is better than mozilla, but the crap that comes with netscape may put me off from using it. I don't like the idea of instant messaging been part of a browser, I have noticed that there are references to icq in the preferences.

I am at the moment evaluating different windows browsers to recommend one for use at work, they all have their + & -.

For me having an editable preferences file and roving users the netscape/mozilla browser is probably what I'll choose.
        --
Pace, as far as my knowledge goes, aol loan developers to the mozilla project to develop the core product. Then aol take the code multiiply it by 3 and call it Netscape 6 or 7.

My biggest problem is that I want my browser to WORK. I have gotten to the point where I'm not particularly fond of browsing to a web page and spending an hour trying to make the plugins work.

Netscape at least MOST of the plugins work. IE6 they all work. Mozilla NONE of them work. *shrug* It's like my Linux argument - supposedly people can make Linux do all kinds of nifty things. It's just so damn hard that you don't really WANT to.

Hmmmm .... NS7 is based on Mozilla ... so you should be able to get Mozilla to work with plugins.

and BTW Mozilla works great with Java and Shockwave flash.
(yes, you need to install Shockwave plugin again, but it works)

I agree with technoid ... Mozilla is great, it's fast and stable and it's not filled with AOL SpyWare+BloatWare like NS7 and I just love it's built in pop-up stopper (drool)

At least I agree with you on the Linux point ....I have fiddled around with it for a while now ... and finally gave it the boot when I found out all the trouble I had to go through just to install a new display driver ... geeee --- kill X boot in consol only bla bla bla and bla.

Oh .. it's stable allright but so is my Win XP .. been days since I was last forced to re-boot by some stupid installer.

Kosh - funny, but the Mozilla build that NS 6.x is based on doesn't work with Java unless you jump through hoops - and even then it's not 100% kosher. Sorry.

Mozilla just isn't ready for primetime. It's a great idea, but its implementation is sorely lacking.

              Kinda like Linux.

                :Sigh:
                Java works perfectly....
But as with a lot of other plugins you have to copy the .dll files from NS plug dir to Mozillas.

And *that* mozilla build that NS 6 is build on was originaly not released because it was not stable!

Yes but you shouldn't have too slaps of careless programming.
Kosh I like what you said about Linux so true.

Mozilla installer will do all the work for you if you have Java SDK installed, but that means you have to do the work to setup java

Only plugins I use are Java, Shockwave, and Flash, so not sure about other plugins not working as those haven't given me any problems. Can't wait til SVG becomes standard in the builds instead of just a part of the MathML/SVG build.

Installing Java is as simple as downloading the JRE
and copying two DLLs. How is that hard?

                        You shouldn't have too.

I think the thing with Mozilla is that it isn't supposed to come with any plugins that aren't built in, so if you want Java out of the box you have to use the Netscape builds.

Everyone should have the Java SDK anyways

*shrug* plugins should work. The whole POINT of plugins is that they are easy to install. I don't REALLY mind copying 2 files - but it's only recently that that information became available... before that it was like voodoo magic for most people.

And a lot of people won't even be bothered to copy the 2 files. They'll just delete the damned thing.

Mozilla is nice and it works well. Its a good replacement for IE whenever I break my win 2000 install and it starts to do weird things.

However, the problem is that IE works well enough (and konquror under linux) that I can't be bothered downloading it and installing it.

As for linux, yes, it is more difficult to setup and use, but when it breaks, it typically doesn't break as badly as windows 2000/XP. If windows 2000/XP break on you, its typically clean and re-install. If linux breaks on you (if it ever does break), you can ussually fix it This is vital on servers. Not so vital for desktops.

You must be kidding when Linux breaks is normally re-install time unless you know obscur commands off by heart.
Dumbest thing I ever saw was when the hard drive that linux was installed had got corrupted. Run xxxx command to fix it.
Fine ran that and it said okay what do want me to do which switch do you want too use type man xxxx for help. I typed man xxxx and got sorry the hard drive is corrupted run XXXX to fix it.
The last farce I had was with samba. In the end there was nothing wrong with it apart from a combination of a duff password file and software that was broken.
