    Oops!
    6L6 is single channel.
    We need 6 of them!
Better make that a 24" fan.
My amp had 2 of them & it felt like a space heater.

i think it is a good idea. and if it's only for the show effect. at least some had an idea, if it was a good one can be discussed.

the MFT of the tubes they use is only ~4000 hours though, that makes about a year running 10 hours a day. but a good thing is you can bypass that AC97 codec.

Now that doesn't make any sense. How many PC users will have a speaker system that will let them discern the difference between a tube-based system and a solid state system? Not too many. And then there's the already mentioned voltage and heat issues.

AFAIK the tubes are NOT shielded, btu are on a different power line (internally separated - hope you get what I mean).

Still it's such a bad idea... let's take a look at the pro's and con's

            PRO
            - better sound (depends on implementation, shielding and so on of course, so it's debatable)
            - looks
            - cheaper than an external tube amp (but then again, a lot less HiFi, I suppose)

            CON
            - heat
            - costs (although an xternal tube amp - while sounding better - will be even more expensive, it will most likely be part of an already existing HiFi stack)
            - AC97 (although it's possible to use an external sound source, but see above)
            - sound quality (proper shielding, etc.)
            - MTBF
            - most users won't even notice the difference, due to cheap speakers, poor hearing, and PC fans
            - even more stress on the power supply

I can't think of any more at the time, but I see a trend emerging... anyone feel free to add more points

Well, the sound may be be warmer, but I can GUARANTEE the Case will be, too!

              AC97 with a tube amp...like putting aluminum rims on a rusted-out Yugo.

Well, at least I haven't seen anyone try to build a power supply out of some old electric motors and a healthways Sterno steam-engine kit...computing...unplugged...

This only reinforces that Great Minds think alike...I have never visited that forum before today.

I hadn't heard that expression before but I don't get out much these days. I had just got done reading the AVS thread when I came back to MURC and saw what you posted just minutes before. Amusing coincidence MM.

                            Get used to it.

A LARGE number of production studios use tube gear for sessions because of the way it sounds. It only gets digitized after everything's all mixed.

A lot of people, myself included, feel that it loses something in the translation. With 20 bit sampling and VT output devices maybe we can get some of that missing something back.
