Its change over time for AMD, you know it and they know it.
Athlon is nearing the end of its life. Its going to become the "value" amd processor.(always been good value anyway)
I don't think they will put a heat spreader on them, they will probably use anything that keeps them cheaps, eg organic package,no heat spreader.
But thats is fine by me.
Bartons and maybe MP's might get the heatspreader, and they are keeping the ceramic package for them as well as they are more performance & reliable server chips.
When I buy a CPU, I count the dollars I have and then get the CPU that will get me the most mips 'n' flops for my dollar, its been an athlon for the last couple of years, and I think its still going to be an athlon when I upgrade in 3 months.
I will happily buy intel if they performance per dollar was reasonably, but while people buy them because they have intel printed on them, intel has no need to make them cheaper.
The K8 will be comming home to rule the roost soon, and they will have a heat spreader and it will become the perfomance king.
PS my next CPU will be thoroughbred(barton if I am lucky), and I think I shoul be able to get 3G worth P4 performance out of it (2.2G in thunderird terms)
