  • Best DVD titles - soundwise

To all A/V enthusiasts around here (KvH this is for you ):

Which are your top 3 DVD titles (DD/DTS) to really enjoy/test/demonstrate your home theater setup ?

Please, exclude crappy movies with great soundtracks and music DVDs of stuff like B.Spears or shit like that.

Alright.. the Matrix. There were details I could hear on my friend's $40,000 system that I'd never heard before.

Pearl Harbor is especially good. You hear all those planes whizzing by and the drums and explosions and bullets. It's even worth putting up with the silly love story (especially with Kate Beckinsale there)

      Everyone says Gladiator.. It's alight.

The Phantom Menace is really excellent, especially the opening THX scream and the pod race.

U571 is good for bass.. the depth charge sequence is good.

I liked X-Men as well.. which has the added benefit of Anna Paquin and an almost naked Rebecca Romijn.

How can you not mention first 30 mins of Saving Private Ryan!?

I'll add my favorites to the mix.

Saving Private Ryan DTS Edition: If your stomach can handle this scene, the audio will rock your world! The same goes for the climactic battle at the end has some awesome sound as well.

Pitch Black: A shocker, but the DVD has a great DTS mix. Best part is when the aliens things are flying around in swarms...

Jin-roh: This is a Japanese animated feature that has a superb DTS mix. The movie is really good too!

Star Wars Ep 1: What KvH said, very well done audio.

Jurrasic Park: The DTS collector's edition has a wonderful DTS track. Concidering this was the first DTS movie ever made, and DTS was pretty much made for Spielberg, you can guess the sound was very masterfully done.

Session 9: I'll have to explain this one a bit...the DVD is only in 2-channel stereo, but with a good Dolby ProLogic II decoder and a nice system, this is by far the eriest, spooky and interestingly ambient soundtrack for a movie I have heard on my system. Great to find out just how subtle your system can be, and how good your DPLII decoder is.

I'll have to go through my collection and see what I liked besides these, and try and post more later.

No Prologic II here, my Yamaha is too old so it only supports Prologic , DD, DTS.

Then rent Session 9 and try it out on your old DPL. It may still sound good ;-)

Yes, the Matrix and SW-Episode1 are nice sounding. The Fifth Element (there are two different versions out at last here in germany, a cheap one with only DD and a "SE" version with DTS and higher bitrate for the video).
I seem to remember that "Erazor" has decent sound as well.

The best sound, I would say event horizon with a good system. That way you can hear all the little whispers and cracks in the ships hull. From hell is also a great sound movie.
