Looks like the R300 will have the performance crown for a while.. NVidia took their eye off the ball doing the XBox and allowed ATI to steal a march on them, good for ATI though.
Just goes to show that you can't rest on your laurels for long or you'll be overtaken by the competition.

We got word yesterday that that the NV30 GPU had come back from the fab on a .15 micron architecture instead of the planned .13 micron. It has been rumored that this could certainly effect NVIDIA launching a part that will be competitive with the ATi R300 which has already had almost three months to mature.
BWHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!
Aren't we glad that TSMC isn't making the GPUs for Matrox.

ATI is looking more interesting all the time. Will the R300 use drivers based on their current set or will they have to be rewritten? ATI drivers have always scared me but I'm hearing they're in pretty good shape at the moment.

I am glad Nvidia might get dethroned. To be honest with you I think the rate at which graphic cards are coming out might hurt the companies more then help them. Every year having to spend 350+ for a new card, and mobo to accomedate an AGP 8x card. I agree progress is great, but at this rate with such drasstic improvements in each card, eiishhh.....I dont know.

"Whatever. You have people in here claiming to be working for Intel and other such companies. Working on Fab processes and other such things. But because they have been here awhile, they are given the benifit of the doubt as to who they are and what they do. But because I'm new to your forum and give facts and truths about Nvidia's next product which I have held, used and tested myself, I am easily concidered a newbie trying to egg someone on or start something. Well the facts are this. I have worked Nvidia, I have worked in thier test labs in regaurds to testing thier cards for stability and compatability with various OSes and machine builds. I Benched the card as I was allowed to to see how it handled relife scenios. But because I'm new, you disbelieve me. I have read company emails in regaurd to TSMC's new .13 micron process and how the NV30 is going to built using it and that the NV30s we would be testing were the first ever off of TSMCs new processing lines with that FAB. Oh, and just so you know, concidering the DIE size of the NV30, if it was on the .15 process, it wouldn't have been running at 450Mhz core speeds".

Just to present another viewpoint (not that this is my viewpoint, I'm just throwing something out)... perhaps NVIDIA is confident enough in it's current crop of video cards that it feels no pressure to release something new at this time.
It wouldn't be me. I'd be feeling the pressure from ATI's R300. But seeing as much as ATI and NVIDIA use TSMC, it's logical to conclude that if there are any problems producing NV30, then there are problems for R300 too.

I think you are presuming way too much. Differences in architecture dictates just as much as what will work at desired levels on a given process just as much (maybe more) as the process itself.
If ATI has a design that is laid out well from the start and is not crammed to the teeth with issues that will make yields difficult, then it will be easier for them to get better yields on the .13 process.
Matrox doesn't look so bad once you consider that not only are they doing this on a .15 process, but they are MASS PRODUCING a 256 bit memory bus on a PCB well in advance of their competitors. This should prove an advantage to them should they choose to tweak this core and series of chips. Moving to a .13 process for Matrox will just be icing on the cake.
For sure, there are interesting things to come, and I don't think it's coming from nvidia. (if you think Parhelia's perf. is bad, you should get wind of how poorly NV30 is doing currently).

I agree.
I think the r300 will be the only 2nd option for me (the 1st is the P ). LAter this year, with drivers improvements and the launch of ATI's counterpart, I decide...
