  • I'm so cool!

And if not at least my CPU is enjoying some Thermaltake Silent Storm action (EU model - 2500 RPM. In the US it's called Volcano 7+ and runs at 3000 RPM).

Running steady at 55.5c (131.9f) CPU temp and that at ONLY 2500 RPM. AHH the sound of silence!

And it fits both AthlonXP and Intel P4.

I can recommend this to anyone looking for a good CPU HSF.

No OC at the moment on the CPU. I am considering unlocking my AthlonXP to play with the FSB. I might need some better RAM though. I am considering getting a stick of 512 Mb Samsung PC2700. It would be sweet to be able to run 166 Mhz fsb and RAM. Also it should allow me to find my processors "sweet spot" Mhz wize. At the moment all it'll do is 147 Mhz fsb, but that has to be because the AGP and PCI is severly OC'ed at that speed. I need to get to 160 at least to get the next divider.

Sidenote: switching from a Taisol 5000 RPM HSF to this baby can lower my CPU temp from 55c to 43c if I set it to max speed instead of the silent mode 2500 RPM I'm running it at now.

Yeah, yeah. Installed one of those yesterday and the clip is a nightmare. It was too tight so it wouldn´t get "under" the heatsink in order to attach it to the back of the socket. I unmounted it and forced it, but I´m not too confident with the results.
It is a powerfull heatsink/fan, but anything beyond the "low" rpm setting is unbearable loud to me. My vacuum cleaner is more silent than this fan at "high"

Well, at least it was confortably priced and the "low" setting provides adequate cooling.

Whats your case temp and room temp if your room is at 16c 61f and your case isn't much higher the cpu temp isn't too good.

If my CPU was running at 55c, I'd be worried!
My Duron 800 is running at just over 1ghz, and runs 35c Idle 43c full load, with case temp of 27c.
Thats using a Thermoengine with stock 4500rpm fan.

My not overclocked Duron 800 runs at full load at 40°C, with an ambient between 32-36° C.

Is it normal or too high?

                RichL,

Actually a temperature of 55c is FINE for a Palomino Athlon XP. Remember the old T-bird. That SOB got H.O.T. I seem to remember around 65c under load with a good air cooler.
Another explanation might be that the hardware monitor in my A7V333 reports core voltage to be 1.82V, which is strange as I have it set at 1.75 default. I even tried forcing it to 1.75, but it remains unchanged. I have no idea if this is intended overvoltage by Asus (as they do with the RAM) or if it's the PLL IC that's givning me wrong readings.

Anyway if we assume it to be correct, then that explains the extra heat I guess.

Also I seem to remember that Durons (T-bird core) produce much less heat due to both lower frequency and less on-die cache. My AthlonXP is almost twice the Mhz of your Duron 800.

                Drizzt,

                Sounds normal to me...

                Nuno,

What mobo and CPU was that on, and what are your temp readings for the three fan speed settings under load?

                Regards,

                Jake

Jake remove that fan and put a 92mm fan on it with a shroud running @7vdc.

That should be just as quiet, but drop you another 5c

BTW if any of you talk cpu temps, for heavens sake state the room ambient temp! Otherwise your #'s mean virtually nothing,

Thanks Greebe it's even more annoying when reviewers do it.

Jake it's okay saying the temps of 126f is fine but if your room is at 60f say and then goes up 90+ your going to hit trouble. Hence my question whats your room and case temps.
                    Drizzt that sounds fine.
Also another thing unless your measure the temp yourself you're left with the whims of software and dodgy motherboard readings.
I don't trust them so I prefer a CPU temp of 121f with room temps of around 86F to 90F. The temps my room reach on hot summers day.

I can give you temperature deltas because it´s really hot around here:
                      Low: ~17ºC
                      Medium: ~13ºC
                      High: ~11ºC

So on a hot day (case temp ~35ºC) I get around 48ºC idle and 52ºC load on the low setting that goes down to a more confortable 48ºC on medium.

Nuno, not case ambient temp, room ambient temp

                        example:
                        room 26c
                        case (chipset) 30c
                        cpu 41c

Sounds like around here in south Florida. Altho we have the AC on 24/7 for at least 9 month out of the year (killer electric bills) if not to drop the temps, to lower the humidity levels inside (always quite muggy)

Yes, but also bear in mind that if you're getting your CPU temperature reading from a motherboard mounted sensor (usually inside the CPU socket) there's quite an air gap between that and the actual CPU itself. I vaugely remember reading somewhere that the actual CPU temp could be 10c higher than reported by the hardware monitor.

Of course, Athlon XPs could have a thermal sensor built into the chip itself, (I cant remember) in which case I'm talking about complete irrelevancies.
