• Power supply question...

Hey...

im just wondering.... how much should the voltages move.. between full CPUload and idle?

got a new PS recently with an Aopen case.... 300W... and it's shifting about 0,2V (12V+/-) sometimes... and that's just the cpu working...

got plans on adding some other stuff to the system.. so im thinking of getting a 350 or 400W PS anyway...

recommendations?

any thoughts about this apreciated...

"It isn't the meat, its the motion."

A higher wattage rated PS isn't going to necessarily give you a more stable output.

I have a Sparkle 400W powering my system. It's ok out of the box, but with a little work it can be a nice PS. My main gripe was the fan, it's loud, I had to put a rheostat on it to bring the noise to an acceptable level. There is very little voltage change between idle and full load, plus you have the option to up the voltage going to the 3.3, 5 and 12v lines, which is what i did.

Thaks Reverend...
... also saw a couple of Enermax PSU's... with 2 fans... and aparently very quiet out-of-the-box... OK price aswell... only heard good things about those over the years... tho never tried one myself...

comments on those?

i want a quiet one... dont want to slice it open like i did with my last one (and the case) to get enough airflow (and less noise)...
..so the enermax's looked nice with dual fans... supposedly low-rpm ones... so...

regards,

Two of my friends are running Enermax 350 watt PS's. Very quiet units. From quick comparisons my Sparkle seems to have a slightly more consistant voltage, but that is just us running basic tests on our own rigs, we have never set up a dedicated test rig to determine for sure.

I have a 431W Enermax ActivePFC, the 8 cm fan is very quiet (can be adjusted via a knob behind the unit) but the second (9 cm) fan that sucks air from the case into the PS has developed a somewhat annoying metallic moan. It's not loud, but definitely the most annoying sound that my system emits these days.

Avoid Deer/Austin they can fail and take your system with them!

If you've got REALLY MUCH money, get an Engelking. They're great electrically, and are exceptionally quiet. Cost like 400,- EUR though
