  • Sound card static

OK, it seems my PowerLeap adventure is on hold for right now, until powerleap sends me a new unit. That gives me a chance to try to fix my sound card issue. When I was preparing for my first PL CPU, I flashed my BIOS to the latest (1014beta2), and installed SiSoft Sandra and 3DMark2001SE to test my old vs new CPU. I had to install DirectX 8.1 to do so. After trying the new CPU (see this thread), I put my old CPU in and noticed a problem with playing sound. When I play a sound (wav, mp3, dvd, etc.), there is a popping static noise in the background. Every 10-20 seconds the static become complete and the progress meter on the app stops until the static ends after 5-10 seconds. The audio from the RR-G works just fine (goes to line-in), so the mixer works. I tried updating the sound card drivers, no difference. I re-flashed my old BIOS, but that didn't help. I then uninstalled sandra and 3DMark, uninstalled all sound card drivers, and used the Win2K built in drivers. No dice. This is a real PITA cuz now I have no music or dvd. At least I still have TV! Any suggestions?

Is it new sound card time? Will a Windows reinstall have a chance of helping?

Well, because of all of the interest in this thread, I will share the outcome of my attempts to fix the problem . The Win2k re-install made no difference, so I tried the card in another machine. I didnt do it sooner because I was certain it was a software issue. Well, it was the card that was bad. I now have a new Soundblaster Audigy which works flawlessly. I was shocked at the audio quality. The fidelity and sound separation are so much better than the old PCI64. Drivers are a bit bulky but I can live with that. With a careful install, it runs very well. We'll see about recording quality soon.
