  • P4 Heatsinks

Well I'm looking at one of these babies with a P4 1.6A CPU to go with it. I've been out of the Intel side of the house for while now, so I need some assistance in finding a good heatsink/Fan to go with the 1.6A (planning on overclocking it), but trying to keep it cheap as possible, since its primarly going to be used as a secondary PC/HTPC/LAN box. Anyone have any suggestions for one less then $50 bucks or so?
Why is it called tourist season, if we can't shoot at them?

I cant complain about the standard huge heatsink supplied by Intel with the cpu. (OK - so it doesnt impress anybody with its looks when compared to the other custom rainbow colored jobs)

Granted I dont overclock, but with a P4 1.8a, I just completed a SVCD creation process (3.5 hours) with TMpgenc and the cpu is sitting at 32C with a ambiant of 20C - I would say there is plenty in reserve?

How far are you planning on going with the clock? - I would certainly try the standard jobbie first.

These guys have some of the best prices I've seen in awhile.

The Swiftech MCX-462-U for $38 or the Alpha PAL8942 for $15 without fans.

I don't know who retails ThermalTake in the US... I've got a Volcano7+ on my XP2000+, weighs several pounds but does a great job! has all the mounting braces, bolts, adhesives and scaffolding you'll need to make it all hold together on a P4 too!

These are the same people that made the orbs, which were practically unforgivable, but I'm not one to hold a grudge for more than a few years...
Look, I know you think the world of me, that's understandable, you're only human, but it's not nice to call somebody "Vain"!

With the standard heatsink for the P4 1.6A (Northwood) it should be possible to overclock it to about 2.4GHz. So I don't think it's necessary go get a new heatsink.

I agree with Agent31 the Volcano 7+ is a good alternative for the retail HS!
            1coolpc sells them for $38.00 plus S&H!

              Haven't you read THG?

P4's can operate without a HS at all!!

(For those who takes it to seriouse: It's a joke )

                GT98 my friend,

Have I ever steered you wrong? ... I MEAN WHEN IT'S IMPORTANT

                Look no further than this:

Furthermore, I see no reason NOT to choose this fan, which gives a fine balance of noise and airflow (but it's still on the noisy side).

I should tell you that I have the AX-7 (the Athlon version of the above heatsink) for my T-bird and it SIMPLY ROCKS! Also be sure to get some Arctic Silver III: http://www.plycon.com/grease.htm

Good luck, and please let us know how your temps dropped. With the AX-7 and above 80mm Mechatronics fan, I'm able to get my 1.4GHz T-bird to 1.6GHz under typical desktop load and run at approx. 48-C. For heavy loads (i.e., gaming), I'll do a milder overclock to 1.53 for stability and sub- 50-C temps. Remember, my 1.4GHz T-bird is the hottest Athlon AMD ever made, so you can see how effective the AX-7 is.

Don't bother with AS 3 AS 2 is just as good and costs ~2$ less!

And it is much thicker and difficult to apply; anyway, I recommand you rather go with Artic Alumina or Nanotherm ICe/Blue coupounds... cheaper than AS2/3, just as good and NON-CONDUCTIVE... remember; there's a hole in the P4 HS for expansion; you would want to get AS in there too much, since the P4 's epoxy coat is MUCH thinner than on the P3/Athlon...
                    What was necessary was done yesterday;

                        PIV 1.6A CPU
ATI Radeon AIW 8500DV (Does this mean I lose my FanBoy Status? )
                        Seagate 80GB 7200 RPM HDD
                        TOSHIBA SD-R1202 DVD/CD-R/W combo Drive
Samsung 256MB or 512MB (trying to figure out if I want 1GB RAM in my Main PC)
