Last night the LCD panel on my old laptop was working just fine, but now the top half has lines running down vertically. Is the display going bad? What could I have done to it since last night that would cause this? Is there anything that I could do to it to fix it?

did you drop it?
the LCD is prolly running out of steam (av. lifespan: 5000 Hours)
and it might be a good idea to buy a new laptop
If the warranty is still running, ask ur seller dude .
Sorry not much help, because i never ever seen such a problem before~

Actually, I carried it to work in my backpack, but nothing should have happened to it, unless that magazine in there is made out of bricks
I thought LCDs lasted longer... no warranty because it is really old, a P100. I got this from my sister because she wants to buy a new laptop, and I wanted something that I could carry Linux around.
Anyways it went away after having it on for a few hours. That's odd, I wonder if it'll come back when I shut down and let it cool. Maybe it needed to be warm? Don't know to much about LCDs, so if anyone could give me some insights or direct me to where I could read up on stuff like this?Gigabyte GA-K8N Ultra 9, Opteron 170 Denmark 2x2Ghz, 2 GB Corsair XMS, Gigabyte 6600, Gentoo Linux

Most probably a dodgy connection. Try squeezing around the edges of the screen, working your way round the whole screen and see if you can fix it if it happens again. If that does work, then you could probably open it up and check all connections are in right.
