dunno, why my sysad chose the IBMs over my choice, but I guess it was some sort of special offer or maybe even a bundled price.

                Hi 103er-Fan,

did you spend the last few months under a rock? ;-)

I wouldn't recommend to buy _any_ IDE-HD from IBM. Many users (including me) had serious problems with IBM HDs, starting with the infamous DTLA series, but also the AVER and AVVA.

I would suggest to buy a Fujitsu or Maxtor instead.

Uhmmm...IBM disks are a bit strange.

I installed more than 500 in the last few months and never a problem, they have however 3 year full warranty, I have one in my home machine...

And still I feel not too much comfortable with them

                    No not really
But I actually never bothered much with HDs, so I didn't really knew that because I am currently running 2 IBM HDs (13 GB, 40 GB), the 13 GB one is now over four years old and it seems like it will die soon (at least it sounds like it ) so I made a back up of the most important data today and bought a 80 GB from WD, unfortunatly not the one with 8mb cache, had not enough money

Btw, I got my tracking number!!!!!!!!!

I'm no fan of IBM drives at all. Every one of the 60/75 GXP drives I've had has crashed. That's probably 6 to 12 drives between home & work.

103er, I was just about to suggest checking out the Seagate Barracuda ATA IVs - fast, rugged, and QUIET

dunno, i've installed tons upon tons of IBM drives in systems, all deskstars, ranging from the 15gb to the 120gb. our return/defect rate on them is still quite small. dunno what people are doing to them, but i've had no problems with IBM drives that wasn't my fault.

the 120GXP's are also about equal with the WD 8mb specials in performance, unless you are doing buffered reads on data that is larger than 2mb...

I think with Maggi's space needs, SCSI would be too expensive, besides, FAST SCSI drives are even MORE expensive - and 7200 rpm SCSI drives are not faster than IDE anymore, plus there is more command overhead with SCSI.

SCSI now is just more expensive than IDE, not more useful, except for very special applications.

IBM HDs once were reliable, fast, and quite cheap.
But since quite some time they really went the ABit way of quality control (i.e.: none! ) Especially avoid all those GXP models.
I have two old DTLA drives and am very happy with them, but two of my four much newer IC30... GXP drives have already died and there are lots of other with the same complaints all over the net.
Speed isn't the issue with the new IBM drives, it's the stability!

A friend of mine still uses my now 5 1/2 years old 2 GB IBM DAQA, which was quite fast back in '97 (it spun at 5300 rpm!), and quite noisy. But IBM had a GREAT track record then when it came to HDs... unlike now. Hope my 60 GXP doesn't die, or a friend of mine buys it
