Hello,
I'm currently considering a serious upgrade of my computer (read: new MB, CPU, memory, several cards, ...). However, I fear that I might be having trouble with the number of PCI-slots. These are the cards currently present in my system:
Adaptec 2940UW
Adaptec 2906
3com 3c900B combo
Creative labs AWE32 (ISA)
In my new system, I'd probabely put a TV-capture card (haven't decided which one), a PCI PC-card reader (thinking about syncrotech); and replace the AWE32 by some PCI-soundcard (also haven't decided yet). The computer will be used for image manipulations (digital photography, hence the PC-card reader), programming, occasional gaming and occasional DVD viewing.
The 2940UW is currently a bottleneck in my system (has 2 10K drives connected, can therefore be maxed out) and most likely needs replacing.
I was thinking about buying a dual AMD-mainboard; if I could find one which has 2 onboard SCSI-channels I could save on PCI-slots (by omitting both the 2940UW and the 2906). This would still leave me with 4 PCI-slots required, but I hate to max out my number of slots (I need 2 SCSI channels because of cable length issues: one for internal drives and another for external equipment (scanner, zip)). So I think I'm looking for a dual AMD mainboard with >4 PCI slots.
Any comments on this kind of setup ? Tips for mainboards ? Brands/models to stay away from ?
Thanks !
Jörg
