Yeah, any and all frontends for Real (Media Jukebox is one example) must still use Real's compiled, proprietary backend. And to GET that backend you must install RealPlayer.

I do. Personally I prefer the interface, the sound quality, and the way it doesnt try to hog 35% of my CPU whenever I enable visual effects for MP3s.
I still use WinMedia player for video though.

I meant the codecs not the players. In any case, I like the player somewhat for RealOne. but it is way too bloated. Why does it have to have all this web enabled crap. Can't it just play sound and video files?

Errm, you're the one always defending Creative, aren't you?
Now exactly tell me what difference there is between LiveWare and those attributes you're blaiming RealONE of.
"corrupts your OS, your registry, and everything you do" - Yeah, LiveWare surely WILL do this, uninstalling LiveWare from the registry, the system folders and other more hidden places is near to impossible without a complete Windows reinstall. Hell, even ATI drivers seem to clutter the registry less!
And if you're unlucky even a plain Creative driver install can "infect" your system.

P.S.: I do agree, however, that RealONE is just an utter piece of crap and would definitely recommend anyone NOT to install it.

Anyway, what's the use of installing LiveWare in the first place? People who install that kind of stuff, kind of deserve the crap they get from it

Yeah, you can choose to install just the drivers from Creative. No registry entries at all, to speak of. No option to just install the player from Real.

I have RealOne player installed on W2K-AS, v6.0.10.505. I don't do much with it except play Real media file types. I haven't installed any special plug-ins. I've never noticed any problem with my system.

Who said I did? I believe I just upgraded through a RealPlayer dialog prompt (been a while and I can't be sure) and I set the usual paranoid settings in the player. I haven't installed an outgoing firewall so I don't know how much chatter is going on (ignorance is bliss?). I haven't experienced any problems.

P.S. I do recall now that I checked the router recently when playing Real media files and I didn't see any traffic.
