  • USB problem / Question

Why when hooking a USB device (Web cam, disk-on-key) to a USB external hub (M$ Keyboard / Hercules GH XP), windows won't recognise the device and won't install the right drivers (instead it installs it as usbdevice.inf) ?

Aren't you supposed to install drivers first anyway?
    There's no place like 127.0.0.1

      A. No.

      B. Those deviced have been used on this computer before (through direct connection) so the drivers (4 those who need) are already installed.

I believe there are quite a lot of USB devices that don't work properly when they are not connected directly to the computer (normally, this is indicated in the manual).

Is it a powered hub ? (and would that make a difference - I have no USB devices yet... )

No, the hub on the MS keyboard AND the hub on the GTXP are non-powered.

In the case of the GTXP there is a HUGE list of devices that just won't work through it.

As for the MS keyboard, I have found mine to be spectacularly picky. If I run my zip drive through it, the whole machine chugs up at boot time, and the drive works only sporadically.

I find it useless as a USB hub, and don't even plug it in half the time. The only things that work through it are my digital camera and (sometimes) the palm pilot.

Hey, and they are all made by Microsoft ! What a coincidence !
(Hope you don't take this the wrong way, it might sound quite harsh, but I merely want to state that if Microsofts own products wouldn't work together....)

Yah, I haven't tried an MS mouse for a while, but my logitech mouse is... umm... ok through the keyboard. Mostly.

My MS Internet Keyboard Pro handles each of these without any problem at all:

                      MS Intellimouse Optical
                      MS Sidewinder Precision 2
                      Logitech WingMan Formula GP wheel
                      Compaq Ipaq 3650
                      Canon Powershot S30
                      Creative Nomad Jukebox

never had a problem with USB devices through my keyboard as long as they don't require more than the 100mA that the ports of any bus-powered USB hub can provide. granted, the pretty much excludes all devices that are more than a keyboard and mouse unless they have a power brick, but again, i've never had a problem.

The ports that come with your PC can normally do 500mA each.

If you are having problems, I suggest you get a PCI card with some more ports on, that can dish out more power.
Its allways funny, until someone looses an eye.
