The Linksys router/switch/firewall stays on but the computers get shut down at night. Can't afford the power to keep all 8 of the systems on 24/7

One system stays on (and online) pretty much 24/7 (everything in that one is overkill server componentry though, so it's made for that sort of thing), the other one goes on when I'm here and gaming.

My machine is on 24/7, with power saving enabled (never know when I'm gonna wake up in the middle of the night, and decide to check the forums and email ).
Kid's rig is only on when they are going to use it.

Depends on the OS. I can't leave my comp on with any Windows 9x OS, crashes after a couple of days. But Windows NT (and 2000/XP), I can leave my computer on 24/7, no problems.

When I was at university, I didnt pay for electricity, which in California is big. So the computers were on 24/7. Now that I have to pay, I put them off if I wont be using them for more than 2 hours or so.

I turn mine off if I plan to not use it for over a few hours, so that means off at night. Sometimes I'll need to compress video and then it'll be on. Lucky that my apartment stays <70 F even when it is 85+ outside with no fan or AC thanks to all the tree coverage

WOW! look at all these responces, thanks

It looks like the majority shuts their PC(s) down every night which I think is a great idea.

I do have two 486's running constantly and been doing so since the 486 days, they strictly run as print servers. for over 6 years

My cable modem and Linksys router remain on all the time, other than that, I agree no need to leave them on unles you run a web site or gateway etc.

                    Thanks,
                    Elie

Used to have it on 24/7 but since I have my HT system, I shut it down @ night.

I shut down whenever I go to bed, or whenever I won't be using my computer for a while.

In the winter I just leave mine on. In the summer I turn it off when I'm not home/awake. -Wombat
                                Ditto.

Next machine will have a quieter CPU fan; maybe I'll be able to leave it on longer. Slot-2 cooler I have is so high-pitched it sounds like a mouse stuck in a 1U.
