  • Best Win2k nat software

Since ICS doesn't work with adsl (I think it doesn't work with all sorts of VPN) and I can't afford a router, what is the best NAT software for win2k ?

    My specs:

Win2k pro sp2 computer connected to the net
2 nics, 1 for adsl and another for lan

I'll try it again just in case, but so far it didn't work.

        My adsl connection is:

        nic ip: 10.200.1.1
        adsl 'modem' ip: 10.0.0.138
        connection protocol: pap
        network: pptp

            Dogbert give www.nat32.com a try

I've been using it for ~6 years now

Windows ICS has to set the internal IP addresses to 192.168.0.x.

Try letting Win2k set up the IP address on the "router" and switching all clients over to DHCP.

Yes, if using ICS, Win2K's requires the host to be 192.168.0.1

If you get intermittent page loading or can't upload files over a certain size, try updating MTUs on each client machines. A value of 1324 or higher should do it.

                  Hope this helps.

Removed: RASPPPOE info since it doesn't apply to Dogbert's situation.

You should not, however, set the MTU too high, as certain sites won't load (or will load very slow) with TMUs of 1500 or higher. Mine is... errm... 1472, which is the recommended value by c't.

Many PPPOE-based ADSL providers "pad" the packets, forcing you to reduce your MTU. Sometimes even as low as 1400!

PPPOE is evil. EVIL EVIL EVIL.

Problem with my connection is more that certain sites EXPECT packets to be a certain size - examples for this are www.gmx.de, www.spiegel.de, and www.ikea.com

All of the above sites won't work (or work well) with a MTU of 1500.

Not true at all.... Windows changes your nic back to that ip but after it's changed u can rechange it and ICS will remain active. It will only kill the DHCP allocator attached to it so u'll have to set manually fixed values to each computer that u want to access the net thru it. Meaning that u'll have to fix an ip to each and set the gateway to the machine running the ICS server.

Don't be afraid to see a couples of errors... ICS will complain that the lan adapter isn't running on 192.168.0.1 and will tell u that DHCP allocator is disabled... that's normal.

One more thing... in case u didn't know... ICS uses nat.

ICS is an old version of Nat1000 (dot COM)

Probably I didn't knew that one... but my main point was that it was possible to run ICS on the port u want.... I choosed to run mine's on 192.168.100.15 'cus I was getting IP conflict with my bro when I was moving my pc over it's house.

                              Thanks for the details.
