  • DirecPC / DirecTV

Anyone any experience with these? I've got the DirecPC PCI card, but not the dish - can I use any dish? Any digital one? Sky Digital one?

All I've got is a Sky Digital one...

Where would I get a proper one without paying loads of money?

Does DirecPC hardware ONLY work with a DirecPC subscription, or is it a generic DVB card?

No idea about European installations since you seem to be in the UK.

AFAIK, you need a special dish.

Hmm, just measured the output from the Sky Digibox and that give ~9V to the dish. The DirecPC card is giving ~20V. I hope I haven't blown up my LNB

You most certainly do not need a special dish. The LNC is different but the dish is effectively the same. But like with any DirectTV setup you should always go with the larger dish as it'll have a lower S/N ratio.

Perhaps I misspoke. I believe to use the DirecDuo setup you DO need a whacky dish with a little inner dish thinger. But I have been known to be wrong, especially about technology I don't own yet.

I didn't mean do I need a special dish, as a dish is a dish is a dish - I did mean do I need a special LNB.... guess a search on ebay then.

Bloody software is sh!te anyway - can't get it to run without it rebooting my PC (tried 4 PCs, one NT (and intel BX, PIII etc) and three win2k (Compaq Intel BX, AMD 761 and KT333, PIII, Duron & Athlon) and they both do the same thing. The drivers install OK, but when you try and do anything with the software (like run it) the PC reboots.

Jason the only reason the DirectDUO setup uses a oblong dish is because the LNB's (LNC's) are not on the same line of sight.

I used to be a Hughs cough "Elite" cough tech. I did not do Joe shoe's setups but very influencial "Execs" systems. Half the time these A**holes got their equipment free (except for online time) and I didn't have to go through the normal channels only to get T1 support... I had a special 1-800# which put me through to those who were at the top of the food chain so to speak.

I quit doing it after finding out very quickly that half of them refused to pay their bills regardless of all the hoop jumping and special "needs" they required (many had multi million dollar homes). Errr

Well, it's not really their fault that light takes 121 milliseconds to reach the satellite from earth, and then the same again to get back. I'm sure if they found a way of speeding up the speed of light, they'd be right on it!

(Assumed the satellite is 22600Miles above and light is 299,792,458 metres a second.)

Well not only that, but their scheme for substations and routers is weird, too.

Ok, I'm sorry I assumed he was also getting TV over this dish.
