Ever wondered what use that does? Well, looks like us Brits have put it to use!

It's against what we call here "hollow charge" which uses a copper 'liner' to break through Armor.

In case of high velocity hard metal shells or conventional explosives, it'll have no effect.

      Anyway, it's a great idea.

Hard metal shells would be affected by this hull charge... of course if it was made of ceramic that would be different story, but then again hard metal shells wouldn't be able to penetrate the hull anyway

note, the copper sheathing is applied only to act as a lubricant, it still has a titanium pin within it which does the damage once inside (ricochet effect)

Also note that there is more damage to this plating than cosmetic as they claim. Once hit the outer sheathing is removed and thus if hit again in the same place a second, third (etc) round would penetrate.

Wonder how this plating would be affected if hit by lightning (just kidding, it should be fine)

Oh here's a thought... a HV generator that if the hull was struck would send out an electric charge back to the originating point where the round was fired by following the smoke trail... ZAP! Kaboom! Crispy Critters

          Hey Greebe,

You have your facts slightly asweke there. A HEAT (High Exposlive Anti-Tank) Round uses an explosive charge to focus metal into area about the size of a dime that punches through armor. Theres several ways to defeat this..such as Reactive armor..which in its self is exposive tiles mounted on a tank. When a HEAT round hits one of those, the resulting explosion causes the Jet to be disrupted. Also there is Advanced Armor called Chobam or Burlington armor that the Brits came up with and the US uses on the M1...the stuff is still top secert to this day, but Defence officals state its multilayered armor with Cermaic inserts and other materials in it. The US Army has even added Depleted Uramium Mesh to it to protect against Sabot Rounds.

The Titanium Pin your talking about is a Sabot round...Sabot stands for Shoe in french for you that are interested. What happens is there is a Pentrator...almost a foot long and looks like a long Dart. Its held in place in the Shell by a Sabot that falls away after being shot. A Sabot round depends on good old Speed/Mass to make it through armor. DU is the best type of material to use for this since when it hits armor plate...its self sharping and keeps going through even heavy armor plate. The Russians have an armor Package called KONTAKT-5 that suppostly can stop Sabot rounds..by a very novel way. The problem with Sabot Rounds is that they can't take sheer forces from the side since they are so narrow. So what this armor does is when its hit by a Sabot round, it chops off part of the round due to the angle of plate that slides down and hits it. I saw an interesting X-ray on a Russian site that showed a Bent sabot round when it hit this armor. The way the US is dealing with this is to make the Rod Longer so if part of it gets chopped off it still has the mass to make it though the armor if I remember my info correctly.

So...what will the guys with the anti-tank rounds do when metamorphic and active camo comes into play in a few years? Depend on ESP to find the target?

Don't forget that DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) is overseeing the Electric Vehicle and Hybrid Electric Vehicle Technology Program

By the time advanced camos come along you'd also see a fuel cell powered troop carrier/fighting vehicle. It's called the All-Electric Combat Vehicle. By the time you hear it, it's too late.

Hybrid powered versions are in the works for the short term as well. It's called the Hybrid Electric M113 troop carrier. While not full-time electric it will be able to operate on batteries when it gets close to a target area.

                  Advantages?

"Reduced vehicle thermal and acoustic signatures. While operating solely with on-board energy storage, the thermal signature was virtually undetectable to the best infrared thermal-imaging sensors available." (US Army Logistics Management College)

                  As for the new camoflages, they come in a couple of types;

                  Metamorphic camouflage

"Metamorphic camouflage uses chemicals, heat, and light to change color. It can be used on clothing, for example, so that the clothing takes on the appearance of the bush a person is hiding in."

                  Active camouflage

"Using sensors, this creates the illusion of invisibility. Day or night, active camouflage could be used to conceal a vehicle; it will have the appearance of a heat wave."

At any distance at all the resulting heat wave will blend into the background.

Camo info from the U.S. Department of Justice, National Institute of Justice, Office of Science and Technology

We have a site here called Latroon (the old Jordanian police post) on the way to Jerusalem. It's currently the armored corps memorial. Besides a wall with all the names of the armored corps that fell in the wars, there are many many armored vehicles that have been used by the IDF since 1948 and armored vehicles captured by the IDF.

You can find there quite a lot of stuff, from shermans (one is cut vertically in half so you can walk between the halves and see how it's inside), centurions, BTRs. BMPs , russian artillery etc. Around 1992-3 they even received a T72 which was quite a novelty.
On most russian armor, you can still see the hits that disabled it, some were hit by sabot (you see a little "sun" shaped hole), and some have nastier hits.
If I happen to take Alice around there once again, I'll try to remember taking her digital cam and post some pictures.

I love that place and I know most vehicles there cause I passed a few days guarding the place when I was in the armored corps for a short while.

CO2 detectors then perhaps? That one is probably easily defeated too.

However, if you gang up a couple of different sensors into one device, you can combine the "possible" locations, if two or three match, then that's your tank...

Fuel cell by product is water vapor with hydrogen fuel. CO2 only comes in when using methane or with a hybrid with a running motor.

I was thinking of the humans inside who were breathing.

Of course, removing them at the design stage would probably yield advantages too...
