  • Help on finding an audio codec

Anybody knows how to obtain the name of the audio codec used in a film?

I mean, something like a tool that given a file simply tells the name of the codec used?

I think about every editing tool should be capable of that ...

    try Virtual Dub for example
Despite my nickname causing confusion, I am not female ...

You mean in an *.avi? Just righ-click on it and choose "Properties". The audio codec & settings will be listed at the top of the Summary page.

BTW, where can I find a video codec (don't know which one) - soo... I have DivX 5.02 installed, do I need older DivX codecs, too?

I have a video which MPlayer won't play, due to lack of a codec, but can't automatically find the right one for me.

So, what are the most used codecs on the net, and where can I get them?

          Doc.

Sadly it is not like that on W2K

Do you mean the Mplayer on *nix?
If so download the codec pack from their website.

If you mean "Media Player", you can still download codec packs.
            I think http://www.etplanet.com has it.

Fire up the AVI with a hex editor (i use UltraEdit, as this editor can display every file in hex). Somewhere at the beginning you should find VIDS followed by the four character code of the stream, i.e. VIDSMP43

MP43 is the codec used (in this case Microsoft's MPEG4 codec version3.

If you have the info about the codec, you can look here
http://www.fourcc.org/indexcod.htm if you find the right one. If not, fire up Google :-)

                    Doc.
You are perfectly right it does look like that when you have the right codec installed but if you don't then W2K is braindead....

                    So were both right

Yeah, I tried with Virtual Dub.

However, this is more a "theorical" question than other...

I mean, with all the chaos out there about codecs and the like, I was asking myself if such a program could exists...a program capable of reading a movie file and obtain the video and audio codec names, even if those codecs are not into the system nor they are known to the program itself...

                            Talk about being paranoid:
                            2)NEVER, EVER run compiled files (.exe's, .ocx's, .dll's etc.)--only run source code.
