  • HP H3970 or Tosh. e740 PDA?

I approached my University to purchase a PDA for me. As it would be a cheaper alternative to a PC. They coughed up £423 which together with the money I had put aside for water cooling my PC, gives me around £600 to play with.

After reading about I have decided to buy one of two models. Either the HP (formally known as Compaq) H3970 iPAQ, or the Toshiba e740.

The iPAQ comes with Bluetooth (BT) as standard whereas the e740 can come with BT or WiFi. The question is which route should I take?

I have seen a few usefull apps for the PocketPC2002 OS that would be of use. Medical dictionaries/textbooks etc. Apart from the ‘normal’ functions of the PDA, it would be nice if it could also do the following:
    • Navigate multiple connections to browse the internet where appropriate. I don’t want to pay for GPRS. But it would be nice to have internet access at home via my desktop PC, or via my mobile.
    • Be able to browse the network and manage data contained on it.
    • Be fully synchronous with Outlook. If a mail arrives, then it goes to both inboxes. If I delete it in one, then it also gets deleted on the other – without having to press a ‘synchronise’ button.
    • Is there a viable alternative to ‘Pocket Word’? I know that M$ claims you are not supposed to be ‘creating’ documents on a PDA, but it’s a pain in the ar$e when every time you open a document you have to reformat it!

Now the above criteria would probably be satisfied on either both, or none of the PDAs as they share the same OS. I think BT would be more useful in the long term as I don’t have a BT phone yet. However the PC adaptors seem to be quite expensive. I have seen some that boast a range much greater than the quoted 10meters. Would the PDA be able to talk to a computer that far away?

WiFi seems cheaper and faster, but as the limiting factor whilst surfing the net would be my 56kbps connection is it worth it???

Taking into account of all of the above The iPAQ seems (to me, anyhow) to be the superior model. Although it carries a hefty price tag.

    Any opinions???

I would be wary of the Toshiba e740 in Wireless LAN mode... the actual battery time goes down to about 1-1,5 hours with the normal battery. Not very useful... (Though I beleive this is a wireless LAN problem not special for the Toshiba) Personally I love my HP Jornada 568 with a 256MB CF card. Small and handy as well good battery and capacity with the CF card.
Actually the newer models with 400Mhz cpu's show very little improvement over the older models, so I would seriously consider picking up one of the older 200Mhz models cheap...

      Thanks for the info.
Cash isn't an issue as it's not mine

Do you know if a PDA will be able to do any of the points above?

I'm afraid I don't since I've not gotten my one online in any way yet (except the cradle of course but that doesn't really count ). But personally I would take a hard look at batterytime and consider how long you want/expect it to last, and then plan accordingly.
And I would try out sites like www.pdagold.com www.pdabuzz.com and especially check their forums as most people there knows a lot about different PDA's

I am gonna go for a bluetooth PDA.
I went into my local PC world today and saw the H3970 in all it's glory. The display is fantastic, it's just a shame it's the size of a brick - more so when i add a microdrive

I wasn't able to view an e740 as they didn't have a charged model available. But the size of the puppy is amazing. It's tiny. And the best part is, that I can add a microdrive without requiring a crappy jacket.

I am going to go back and see what the display is like. If it's naff, then i'll go for the iPAQ. I hope it's not.
