    And whatever you do chose:
Besides good ram as already stated,
A good PSU and A big HeatSink!

    Does wonder for stability

Get the P4 2.26 or 2.53 with the 533MHz processor bus and the ASUS P4B533-V mobo (845G chipset).

It uses DDR and has onboard audio, video and LAN. Just disable the onboard features you don't want to use like the video (comparable to a TNT2)

It is very stable and has the 4:5 memory divder to OC the DDR memory above 133 MHz FSB.

I have this setup using the 2.26. With a good HS/Fan it looks like 3Ghz for me

Too bad your brother is a non-technical person Otherwise I would have recommended P4 1.6A and push it to 2.2...

And for stability, get GeForce or Matrox!

No ATI, no VIA, no Creative Labs.

Any thoughts on the Asus P4S8X mobo? It's using the SiS648 chipset which I've seen rated pretty highly.

Thanks again to all of you for your comments and recommendations!
