To answer your question, Yes, import taxes and fees are jacking the prices of any product where the manufacture doesn't have a plant in the country.

In a chat with Cornerstone they verified that this was the case for the exceptionally high prices of their monitors in virtually every country outside of the US and Taiwan.

Thing is, that it severly depends on the targetted market and sometimes it can be actually cheaper to buy something not in the country it get manufactured.

Just try to get a VW as cheap in Germany as you can buy 'em in Spain or Greece ...

Why is import tax so expensive in Europe than (and Canada, maybe Oceania as well)? I know in Asia it is VERY cheap.

And, I don't think US import tax is THAT cheap... most hardware is imported from China, Taiwan, Malaysia and Indonesia, isn't it?

Please enlighten me.

it's not really about taxes ... it's about the target market and how much you can get from there, ie. how much the people can afford and are willing to pay.

Import taxes are usually high for anything in Canada for everything, also seems higher on cars for some reason.

In US the market is enormous. In EU this is only going on now (People going to Greece to buy cars).

Most British people still don't order h/w from Germany and vice-versa. In US newegg ships to all US, selling in larger volume than any European vendor, requiring manager, secretary, accountant, a few RMA people and a few packaging people = similiar running costs to smaller vendor.

Be happy. In Slovenia (2M people) the hardware costs 133-150% of US prices, GNP being 1/3

think about marketing specially adapted for each small country in Europe vs. the size of the US, hiring translators for translating all those manuals into a gazillion different languages, taxes, etc.

if you compare average price over here vs. the US, it's not that much different from US price + 19% (this country's VAT) + small margin to cover other expenses. That goes for most stuff, not all of course. Some stuff is much more expensive here because people are willing to pay more for it, and some stuff is cheaper as well.

Like we can get most best buy DVDs for, say 6-9 euros, while they cost 15-20 USD in the US
