PeTe, I have a R8500 built-by-ATI and it's 2D is noticably down from the old Radeon VIVO. I would call it just sufficient, not more.
But you're right about those R9700s. Those are all coming from the same production, only the Hercules is apparently from an own produtcion. It also has a different color (blue).
My HIS is a built-by-ATI and its 2D is quite a bit up again from the R8500.
