i am famous for my good eyesight (no kidding) at 1280x1024 everything looks just to clumsy and big for me.
it is running beyond spec anyway (rated at 75Hz at that res) so i guess i have to pay the price for it now.

now a resolution in between (like 1454x1110) would be perfect i guess and would lengthen the lifespan of my monitor but nobody is answering on my custom resolutions thread

          ...maybe two possiblities.

Check for monitor cables running parallel to power cables or coiled cables.

Could be your graphic card is picking up something in the box.

Mild steel sheets for magnetic field shielding between monitors, whatever.

I had two different machines doing this. Different video cards and the problems seems to be with the motherboard. Since I upgraded one the shimmering has disappeared completly. The other still does it with varying degrees depending on it's mood.

...about 5-6 years ago I needed to get hardware approved by the Swiss equivilant of the FCC. First they tested free air, then in the box. You'd be amazed what emmisions ricochet around in the box and mess with other components. Once they refused to approve a card because of emmissions, until we proved it was their mobo, not our card.

well i borrowed a 15" LCD, hooked it up with it's own cable and guess what - the shimmering is still there it is by far less noticeable, but it's there. so it seems my monitor is OK after all.

                but what is it then?

...look for the constant. You've moved, so there was nothing there. I assume with your box there's all the stuff that goes with it. Take a box alone somewhere else, hook it up and look. If it's still there, it's in the box.

Remove the cards one by one and see if it disappears. If there's nothing left in the box but the graphic card and the mobo, duh... lemme see... must be the, duh... graphics card? ...oh yeah! The floppy!

hmm this will be difficult ... i got no floppy! it's not the gfx card, i already tried a gf2mx, same thing. it is not the cables. and i guess it is not the room either. i hate these kind of computer problems

...pluck the cards, one by one, or shuffle them around. I know it's a time consuming pain in the ass, but whenever I don't follow the logic of elimination, I spend more time and get more and more frustrated, and end up following the logic of....

ok i plugged everything out (scsi card, nic, sb live, even cdroms), even took one memory stick out (tried both). so the only thing that is still getting power are mobo, CPU, memory, GFX, HD. and what happens? exactly nothing changes it doesnt even get weaker or sth. nada. so as it's not the gfx it must be either the PSU (i dont think so though) or the mobo.

i migth try a pci card and check if this is in any way related to the AGP slot. the only pci card i got is a matrox mystique 2MB though
can it handle 1280x1024 with 256 colors?

ok so i put the matrox mystique in, this baby actually does 1600x1200x8bitx60Hz and whopping 1280x1024x8bitx85Hz!

the flickering has gone away, almost. it is unnoticeable unless you stare closely to the monitor so that you can see every pixel and even than it is almost unnoticeable. i'd even say this is normal.

so whats the conclusion? AGP slot borked? mobo broken? PSU too weak?

Mobo or PSU don't deliver good current, would be my uneducated guess.

Borrow a friend's PC and try your system with his PSU, if this doesn't cure it, try your card in his system, if this doesn't cure it, buy everything new

well that's really a good advice az, because that's what i usually tell my friends when they bug me with their computer problems

but anyway i got good news: der feind ist umzingelt i put another PSU in (cheapo 300W), ripples are still there. so the only thing that wasn't changed is the mobo. so logically it must be it no?
i think i might have been to brutal when i pushed the gf2mx in a few days ago to check ut2003 out

at least i got a good reason to wait for the SIS746
