Intel does not force the processors to run at the same speeds, so it is possible to run two processors asychronously on an intel motherboard. the catch is they (and thus the motherboard manufacturers) do not support or warranty that sort of actions. AMD boards force the processors to the same speeds.

again, with using XP's as MP's... its possible and it has been known to work for people... but, it has failed for others, and AMD does not warrenty or support it. AMD was working on more locking of the processors, so new steppings may or may not have the same results as older ones...

Ahh, sniff. I remembr by first experince with a multiprocessor system being at a Boston COmputer Museum 10 to 11 years ago. 11 processors working as one rendering a 3d flight simulator game/simulation. I didn't see a PC capable of that level of detail for 5 more years and that was with a good 3d card.

They also had a mouse as bigger than a Geo metro and keyboard and monitor to match. It took 2-3 people just to operate the machine but it was very fun.

The L5 bridge mod success rate is high for the XP's. Got two XP2000's in my MSI. Some failures are due to a poor conductive trace on the L5 bridge. Got a friend in Oregon that learned that. I use a conductive pen and like the label says, mix thoroughly before use. A small piece of tape protects it from possible future CPU cleaning.

A friend by the name of pijo at amdmb has two modded XP1800's in an Asus dually. He runs them at 1679MHz (146FSB).

But the L5 bridge mod is just to unlock the multipliers of the XPs isn't it??? I should still be able to use two XP 1800s at stock speed with nomodification, shouldn't I???

The L5 mod is needed to let the MB think you are using a true MP processor, it's not related to the multiplier.

In any way, i'm running 2 x XP 1700+ on a Tiger MP, look at my signature

Here is a how to for the L5 bridge mod. No need to do the L1 bridges unless you have a board with an adjustable multiplier and want to use that feature.

There is a poll over at 2CPU with some varied opinion about the XP to MP mod. Some were of the opinion that it was it OK to use an XP in an SMP application as long as the L5 bridge wasn't cut. My feeling is if AMD didn't mark that XP with the uncut L5 bridge as an MP, it just makes it convenient, but no better than an L5 modded XP. Mission critical, by all means buy MP's. I'll take the savings using the XP's.

I don't really know what AMD does to certify a CPU for MP use, but it would be nice to find out.
