  • HELP: there must be a simple way...

I don´t like to ask for help, but I seem to be stuck.

How the h..l do I get to see the mail header in Outlook XP?

I have no problem to do this in OE, but I just can´t seem to find the way in Outlook, and yes, I have browsed the help file without any luck.

I´m sure there´s an easy answer. Please?

Open the email as a separate window (i.e. not in the preview pane). Then View --> Message Header

    That's for Win 2k anyway.

Double clicking the bar at the top of the preview pane is the way to see it there.

      Thanks for answer GNEP,
problem is I don´t have that option in the View menu. In my localized version of OfficeXP the only item related is greyed out.

      Still stuck.

Hmmm.. to be fair, this was for Outlook 2k on Win 2k.

It's not done its clever collapsing the menu thing has it (I assume you aren't hit by Friday dumbness though )

This option does only appear when I have an email opened in its own separate window though - be sure of that!

Otherwise, sorry I can't be of more help.

Yes, I remember good old Outlook 2k; I had no probs there either.

BTW, the greyed out thingy wasn´t related after all.

          Still stuck.

Right click the message, pick "options", and there it is in a field at the bottom of the options window.

            NOT entirely intuitive, is it?

              Gurm,
              you´re right as always.
Problem is, I imported a lot of mail from OE and for those there is no header info. Baahh!

I found some older mail in my archive, which were received in Outlook2k and they have the header intact.

              Mystery solved, I guess.

              Thx

                BTW,
it is a ridiculously small window to view the header, and there doesn´t seem to be any provision for making bigger.

It´s even better in OE, where you can also view the message source (for hidden html code).

Or am I still missing something in Outlook?

If not, why is it like this!

I always found OE better than the "big" outlook for just mailing purposes. Was WAY easier to use, much faster, did crash less (Outlook usually crashed every time I used it - was related to something, might be it crashed when I started Opera), and had everything I needed.

Yeah, I use Opera too, mostly, one of the reasons being it has a built-in mail client.

But that doesn´t mean I don´t want to know how the "other two" works.

Now you make me feel really stupid

How do you open your received emails in notepad?
                        Are you joking?

Make notepad the default e-mail editor perhaps? Dunno...

Out of curiosity: Why do you use Outlook instead of OE?

You can open OEs DBX files in Notepad, but remember it's one big file for each folder The Outlook PST file I've never tried to open, but it might be a weird format, or plain text (where needed). Try it

Outlook's PST file is the entire database (includes all folders) and can't be read with a normal ASCII editor. I always use the "Options" command myself; RMB "Options" or select Tools/Options. You could save the E-Mail as a .msg file and you can view the embedded headers at the end of the file with an ASCII editor. The entire header won't show up if you save the E-Mail as a .txt file. OE is definitely easier when trying to view headers.
