  • Game Server

I was asked by someone to put together a inexpesive Game Server and I'm assuming that a game server is more or less along the lines of a file server...something with lots of RAM and a decent CPU to power it. Any suggestions?
Why is it called tourist season, if we can't shoot at them?

linux or windows? linux, the lowest available duron (1300?) and 256mb will be plenty, windows 512mb i guess. better cpu is always better of course, but since this is supposed to be a inexpensive one...

If it serves only as a server, the requirements aren't that high.

You can take a look into this PDF here http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/doc...rver-HOWTO.pdf , they describe how to setup a gameserver for quake, halflife or unreal tournament.

[edit]. That's for Linux, but again, if it is only used as a gameserver ........

For a game server, in order of importance:

        Connection
        CPU
        RAM
        HD

Depending on the game, a CPU ~1GHz should be enough. You should have at least 256MB of RAM. More is better of course. You need a reasonably fast HD for level loads. Otherwise, the HD isn't really a factor.
