The amount of data that is read at a time is adjustable.
My DVDROM still lives without making any troubles - but then it is a SCSI one (an old Toshiba SD-M1201) and those tend to be a bit higher quality-wise.

I got the best results with DivX 5.02, but I'm now waiting for XviD to hopefully go 1.0 at the end of the year (b-frames are in dev builds now) and using OGG Vorbis for all my audio instead of MP3.

        Indiana,

Does it correctly encode MP3 audio? I ask because I've seen a lot of "quickie" encoded DIVX discs lately where the audio gets out-of-sync after half an hour of movie time... and it always turns out that the MP3 was encoded entirely wrong, which requires that I rip the divx apart into avi stream and mp3 stream, decode the mp3 stream with winamp, and re-encode it PROPERLY before merging it back up with virtualdub.

No Audio desynchronization here. I thought this was due to a bug in the Fraunhofer encoder (missing a few bytes on each block) and DVDx uses LAME 3.92 which is better quality-wise anyway.

I thought encoding at 160 bitrate got rid of the synch problems with mp3?
Personally i use Divx5.02 myself, gonna check those other encoders to though

              Oh JEEEZUS, ok.

DVDx produced decent video. In fact, its video came out cleaner than using CladDVD + VirtualDub.

But the audio encoding was SHIT. UTTER AND TOTALY SHIT.

Crackling, stuttering, dropping in and out. Ick!

Add to that the utter lack of documentation, and I'll take a pass on this piece of... *shudder*

Yep ... I've noticed that Gurm has started to get back to his old self lately.

You must have configured something bad since I don't have ANY audio issues.

You don't need to set (more like should not set) the Audio/Video synchronization switch, aslo don't select "overlap". Too high Cacheing values are said to cause troubles as well.

These are the settings I'm using:

                    And for LAME:
