  • Filesharing with Windows XP

    Hi!

I think I'm loosing my mind....
I have tried to get filesharing to work between a win xp home and a win xp pro computer. (Don't know if home/pro has anything to do with it)
    Anyway...
I've enabled filesharing and both computers are in the same workgroup. The computer that is started first can access the workgroup and the other can't.
    Anyone know what to do?
The computers are in the same subnet.

Try disabling simple file sharing and see what happens.

Or try using the home networking wizard, or try using IPX/SPX.

WinXP has some... issues with local networks (I assume you ALSO have an internet connection) and filesharing.

Both computers connect to internet via a hub and cable modem. I can't find a way to turn on or off simple file sharing in xp home. I guess that ipx could be a solution but I don't like installing that protocol.

Make sure encryption for 802.11b is not turned on is is turned on for all. The first XP machine I set up had this turned on by default for some reason while the other two did not. None of them had 802.11b cards.

Ok, I can relate. A friend had the same problem - pc's run into hub and then into cable modem.

The problem is that Windows wants DNS names for the machines. And they don't have 'em, because of the cable modem...

So you either use a different protocol (take your pick - IPX, NetBEUI, whatever) or you have to add them to each other's hosts files... or use WINS.

Thanks Gurm, I'm having a similar problem with my XP comp and my wife's with ME. I think I'll resort to loading NetBEUI.

That is the way XP HE shares files and I don't believe it can be turned off. It can only be disabled in XP PRO.
