Preferred 17-18" TFT for use with Parhelia?

Well I have Mr P & the TFT in place, currently on a 1Gig PIII. The 2.4G PIV is still on order.
I'm still getting used to it. The TFT is great at 1280*1024 on the digital connection, but not so great at non-native resolutions. I had it working nicely with my 19" Iiyame 452 as an independant 2nd display (but only with the WHQL drivers - the latest drivers wouldn't work that way).
I currently also have a 17" CRT attached, so I am in stretched 3456*864, which takes some getting used to. I'm hoping to swap the 17" for a higher spec so I can run at 3840*1024.
Haven't tried gaming yet. Initial feelinga in 2D are that the pixel response is a little slow (as seen when dragging windows around) but you soon get used to it.
I have to say I could easily get used to Browser on the left, App (currently Dreamweaver) in the middle & Outlook +trillian on the right.
I have the task bar down the left as I don't want it stretching across 3 monitors.FT.

The EIZO TFT are top rate. A bit on the pricey side, but they have the best color uniformity I've seen on TFT's so far, and display even 640*480 like a marvel....
OTOH, with the P I'd recommend the Sony 18" TFT P92 (is that the proper name?) with a thin border (+/- 1cm) and you can mount 3 of them on a single foot...

It's the response time I'm interested in.
The samsung I've got quotes 25ms. However is that the rise and fall time combined or the rise and fall times of 25ms each. It's no good for playing games.
I see Hitachi have some quoting a rise time of 12ms and a fall time of 5ms total 17ms.

A lot don't even bother these days which probably means horribly slow.

It can show more colors, however....
The review of the Sharp 1820 by Maximum PC showed no ghosting and won 10/10 and a KICKASS award. It'd be nice to see other reviews, however, but Sharp LCD reviews seem rare...Let us return to the moon, to stay!!!

Problem is most reviews don't even mention gaming or DVD or if they do it's only one small brief sentance. Apart not trusting reviewers, look at Abit reviews for instance always getting top marks besides being known for poor reliability, the k133/133a issue and it seems no reviewers have picked up on the banding issue on the P even one whos gunning for it. The only way is too check in the shop and since LCD's aren't mainstream yet it's difficult and living in Sheffield means theres no big computer shops around so you can check several on display.

take it from my great experience (ahem
), any budget TFT isn't worth it for gaming. I compared LG, Samsung, Philips, Iiyama and Eizo (also some el cheapo brands but most aren't game).
So far my 2 favorites are the Iiyama and Eizo. The Eizo is gorgeous all round but costs a lot. I'm currently using the Iiyama AS-4315UT 17" TFT. It has a rating of 25ms (10/15ms rise/fall). I also play games on it with no problems. It also supports 16M colors.
The only thing that could be better IMO is that completely or almost completely dark/black backgrounds cause it to loose a bit of brightness when moving (takes arstechnica.com for ex.). You don't notice it in a movie or a game, but for the site I mentioned you can see it when yo uscroll the window up and down. For the rest, I like it a lot. I bought it a few months ago at slightly less than 1000 EUR. Now it's gone down to about 750.
The LG, Philips and Samsung I put in the same basket. They're not bad, but surely not top rate. The Samsungs are usually rated 25ms. Philips and LG (now one company for monitors) are usually rated 25 or 30ms, with some larger screens at 40+. they're good for work, but not really for action (depending on how picky you are). They all cost between 450 and 600 EUR.
Unfortunately I haven't tested the Eizo for more than work applications.
Sony's are usually very nice looking but have slower response times and cost more even than the Iiyama...
Note that not all Iiyamas are created equal either. The AS-4315UT is a better model...
All in all, if you really want to watch DVDs, get a DVD player for the living room or (for divxs) put a cable between your PC and a large screen TV...
