People would have done it "just because." I remember seeing people figure out how to unlock Celerons for SMP, and it involved a drill press and jumper wires. It's pretty hard to un-blow fuses.
Gigabyte P35-DS3L with a Q6600, 2GB Kingston HyperX (after *3* bad pairs of Crucial Ballistix 1066), Galaxy 8800GT 512MB, SB X-Fi, some drives, and a Dell 2005fpw. Running WinXP.

and, after the Celeron II was released it became almost impossible to modify them for SMP, as they moved all of that stuff onto the die iirc... would take quite the tools to modify the die to enable these things even if they did exist on the processor die...

and, if they didn't move it onto the die it would still take quite the effort to unlock it...

Actually, hardocp says that nobody else has been able to do it yet, including themselves. It wouldn't be the first, or even the tenth, time that somebody has passed Photoshopped WCPUID pictures around. Notice also that they picture shows two processors. That means Xeon, which has been HT for a while.

If there's a die fuse blown, there's not likely anything a BIOS can do to get around it.

Yeah, the pics could be fake and they never said how they did it, but they said it was a regular P4 2.4GHz. And it was VRZone that said they did it themselves (I think that's who it was, not sure, I just got in and I'm a bit drunk), and they seem to be a respectable site. Dunno what they would have to gain by lying about it. Oh well, maybe they'll tell us later on how they did it or maybe we'll never know. HT isn't that big of a deal anyway IMO. Probably turn out to be like MMX or something and just mainly be a bunch of Intel hooplah.

Well, Hardocp.com has a nice article about HT and I was actually a bit surprised about it. They did leave out the fact that HT will drastically decrease performance in some areas for the CPU, but overall it looks like a clear winner. Heh, but not winner enough to justify the hefty price tag Intel is putting on its 3GHz. Has Hardocp become an Intel whore??
