  • AOL IM question

What is the name of the executable for AOL's instant messanger?
It's installed on a computer here at work, and I need to get rid of it.
It was installed covertly, is not in the add/remove programs, and is not installed in an obvious location. There is no shortcut to it, and it's not on the start menu.
But I know it's on this rig, because I just busted a student chatting with it.
I need to remove it, but I can't find it...

Also, there are sometimes entries that are in Add/Remove Programs but hidden. Try looking in the registry in "\\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\C urrentVersion\Uninstall" This is where add/remove programs gets its entries. Even hidden ones show up here. If there is one, it will have an uninstall string. Enter this string at the command line to uninstall. I discovered this once when trying to revert to an earlier version of flash once.

He probably renamed that as well. Try HJ's recommendation. The kid may have renamed AIM, but I doubt he could rename AIM's libraries without busting the program. I'd look, but I don't have AIM.

You may not find anything. There are Java applets that work nicely on AIM, and you can't do anything about that short of disabling Java.

Are there AIM ports that can be blocked?

            Yes and no

AIM by default uses port 5180 if I remember correctly.

However, the client has the ablility to use ANY port for anything. So its kinda a moot point to block a port, unless the user does not know about the port changing ability.

            Good Luck!

Or was it 5190 or 5160.... regardless, my comment still stands, you really can't block the ports to keep users from using it, unless you have a software firewall, like ZoneAlarm which can keep the APP itself from accessing the network.

I'm not worried about blocking ports.
I just need to get IM off of there.
The student has lost internet privaliges. I only have 2 rigs on the DSL in my lab, so he'll just be moved to a different machine. He may loose access to the lab all together (not just because of this...it's just the last straw).

Can you tell us more about what did that student do?
                It is quite interesting

And, is using IM in the labs sooo serious? Personally I think, although it should not be allowed, a warning is more than enough.

As Wombat said, there is a online Java version of AIM, called AIM Express, available at http://www.aim.com/get_aim/express/aim_expr.adp you might want to block access to all aim websites too.

Well, it would appear he was using the AIM Express java stuff.
I found the exact link Wywywywy mentioned in IE's history...

It's already kinda been touched on, but I was gonna tell you to install a firewall (Kerio or ZoneAlarm) and when the program is launched, it would know it's path/filename. Just a thought.
