faster cpu = slower?

Hi, i replaced my P2-400 by a celeron 1100 today, but im not really getting the impression system speed has improved, but has actually decreased. it's like every few seconds my system hangs for a very short moment, what could be causing this?

system info

Celeron 1100, 128kb, Asus P3V4x motherboard, 256mb 133mhz RAM, Riva TNT2 32mb, Creative Live! player, 13gb 7200 Maxtor hdd and 40gb 7200 IBM hdd

Are you speaking of choppy games, or is Windows usage choppy too? Three things that can cause general choppyness come to mind: Either DMA is not enabled on the hard disk(s), the Windows Indexing Service is playing tricks on you, or you have some devices sharing interrupts.

Oh by the way, did you reinstall Windows after you changed your CPU?

nope, didnt reïnstall windows, but everything is choppy, windows, divx, typing this, games, everything. But it used to work great with the P2-400. do i need to reïnstall windows?

I might be wrong, but didn´t the p2 have alot more cache than your new celeron? that might make a theoretical difference in rare occasions, i doubt anybody can notice it though.

have you checked your bios-settings, there could be some silly default setting that is bottlenecking your system...

1. Yes, the p2 had 4 times as much cache, but the celeron is clocked much higher

2. nope, level 2 cache is enabled and detected by sysinfo

3. my cpu runs at 39 degrees (passive), at least that is what Asus probe says, gets up to 63 when running quake 3. That should be cool enough. And the core is running at 1.8 volt instead of 1.75, my motherboard doesnt support lower then 1.8

Then, as Tempest said, are you sure DMA is on?

If nothing works, pop the XP CD in and do a repair! It usually fixes many problems but you need to WindowsUpdate all over again...

I don't suppose you bothered to even notice that that motherboard does not support newer cores.

The problem with Tualatins is the lack of good chipsets:

440BX = moddin or Powerleap or upgradeware adaptor
815EP = 512MB limit
820 = sucks with SDRAM
840 = good, but RDRAM
Via Appolo Pro = VIA
Serwerworks = forget AGP

Why the hell are you people telling him to reinstall everything? You don't even know what the problem is yet. He switched <B>processors</B>, which is about the only thing you can do to a PC that doesn't require new OS drivers.

My money is on the mobo not supporting Tualatin properly... Maybe a BIOS update or even adding the microcode into the BIOS yourself could help...

Is the 1100 with 128 kb cache a tualatin? I though the Tualatin's were 256kb Cache/0.13micron. that why I took the 128 one/0.18micron Celeron. I do do my homework you know!

The motherboard doesn't look compatible with the Tulian processor.

Time to look for a new motherboard (they arn't that expensive) and sell old CPU+motherboard onto friend.
