IBM has an smart-tool (it used to be EZ-SMART, but now it has changed name to SmartDefender, http://www.storage.ibm.com/hdd/support/download.htm ) that can explain smart-messages (and monitors the drive from the operating system).
My Quantum Atlas 10K started giving SMART errors upon boot, but the errors were very serious. They stated that the drive was failing and had corrupt sectors. I did however manage to save most of my data (despite the fact that Windows had problems booting due to the corrupt sectors).
Certainly back up your data. If the drive is within warranty, I'd send it back (my Quantum was replaced free of charge). If it isn't in warranty, you could still use it as a scratch disk (or run some tools of it, but I wouldn't trust it with any datafiles). (put mp3s on it - but make sure you also have them on CDs
