MP3 Ripping

MP3/MP3Pro in my opinion is of lower quality at the same bitrate. I encoded some music at 192kbs and 128kbps for MP3 Lame, MP2, MP3Pro, Ogg Vorbis 1.0, Windows Media 2, Windows Media 7, and Windows Media 8.

IMHO, I found that OGG and Windows Media had better definition. More of the frequencies sounded accurate when compared with an original wave file. I'll have to try Monkey's Audio.

Variable bitrate from 32kbps to 320kbps is definitely better than 128 or 192 constant. I still believe that OGG is better but it may just be a matter of ear.

MP3 VBR vs. OGG (also VBR) can very much compete.

I use cdex and the ogg backend, haven't had any crash problems with it so far. I did rip both cd's of Phantom of the Opera into 48meg of oggs, and while I do hear the compression, it's better than the first mp3 rip of it I did years ago, and make it easy to upload to work over 128k DSL.

I don't believe the crashing is an issue with CDex or Ogg, I just haven't gotten around to messing around with it besides trying the latest DLL.

OGG does tend on average to take up more bandwidth on average at the same variable bitrate.

I've got the entire radio broadcast of War of the Worlds in OGG formatt though I do have the CD. It's just fun to listen to.

OGG can do both constant and variable bitrate. My encoder defaults to variable. OGG can also go up to 500kbps. It's nice to have a choice at least.
