    POWER

    K

i believe S1 is PM by APM(..ie advanced power management)

what worked for me was to set the ACPI flag to on/yes in the bios, set POS to S1 and the video options to suspend. the rest of the timers for anything i disabled and i use the power options within windows to set.

Guess what happened to me this morning? Another fab IE lockup! :-)

Oh, I forgot to mention, when it locks and I go to shut down, "MsgApp" is hung and needs to be terminated.

I'm really not convinced that this is a power issue.

Today, I left IE open overnight. The IE Window that I left open acts normally, and I can surf with it. When I try to launch a new one...freeze.

And again, if I launch windows explorer and type in a URL, everything is kosher.

Ok, check THIS out...if i let the newly launched IE window "sit" there for a minute, the "e" logo will change into a generic white program icon (as if it's not responding). If I wait a few minutes more, and surf the web in a different window, the NEW window (that was just "locked") will start responding.

            EDIT:
and see if THIS doesn't seem odd...

            C:\Documents and Settings\dlodico>pv ie*

            iexplore.exe 2044
            iexplore.exe 1212
            iexplore.exe 1016

those are the ie processes I have running. But I have 4 IE windows open (one of which that was open by running explorer.exe and then typing in a URL). Is that how it SHOULD be?

I FOUND it! Every day I would come in and try to kill a few processes to see if it would make things respond normally. Well, this morning I got it. The culprit was "DAMon.exe". I killed it with that nifty process viewer program (see page 1), and now everything is kosher.

It appears to be some sort of DELL program, but what it does I don't know. However, if I right click on the EXE and check out the info, it says "MessageApp MFC Application", which was what wouldn't die when I would try to reboot...I believe I mentioned this earlier.

Well, I uninstalled Dell's preinstalled "support software", and damon.exe seems to be gone from the reg and the disk. Serves me right for keeping Dell software on the PC.
