Okay, I'll have to go on the record as saying that this time thop has no idea what he's talking about. MAD is definitely better sounding than the default NullSoft decoder. Also, if he could explain why everyone is switching from mpg123 to MAD/mpg321 if it sounds worse, that would also help.

And it will still make one hell of a difference on desktop speakers. It does on mine. And if you're suggesting that I need quality stereo components to hear the difference, I have those too, except why use MP3 on those?

Well, I like both Foobar and Winamp, but I'll probably use WinAmp more since I have used it a lot in the past. And I do hear a difference using MAD with Winamp, and it does sound better. What are you basing your statement on thop??

Actually, what does "sound better" means?
As close to the original as possible? I never listened to the original!

There is a difference between MAD and the Nullsoft decoder, but what makes MAD "better"?

(I'm not taking piss I just simply don't understand )

Who is everyone and where can i find them?

No it doesn't make one hell of an difference. There is some auto-suggestive force driving you to think it sounds better. That is the same force that lets people buy, actually waste, 500$ on magic speaker cable. Have you ever done a true blind test? You would be baffled by the results.

Both Winamp (which uses the Fhg reference decoder btw.) and MAD conform to the MP3 standard and thus the output is identical at 16bit. Now with 24bit MAD should have an advantage as it claims to smooth the sound. In fact there is a difference in the sound, but so minor it isn't worth mentioning.

If you want to i can decode some short sample to wavs with MAD and Winamp and put them on the net. We'll see then if you hear a difference

placebo is a powerful force when it comes to music...

but then again: mpc's DO sound almost like the oryginal (and this doesn't mean that they will sound better to you then mp3's)
