I'm hoping that this OLED really takes off, and that most of our dreams, okay mainly what Jammrock and Wombat said could become a reality in the next few years. However, when I showed this thread to a friend, he mentioned a few of the downsides of OLED, his main issue with OLED is that it has a tendancy to turn orange after a few years time. Tell me this is just his being ignorant and not fact.

Its going to be several years still in development to get the lifespan and brightness up to acceptable levels on OLED technology. You can get products using this now, such as some of the car stereo replacements that have color displays and the Motorola Timeport phone (think they only sold that for about a year tho). Problem is the blue oleds have a very short lifespan and 'burn out' quickly in less than a thousand hours. Other colors like red last longer, but still under 5000 hour lifespan. Plus they shift color as they age. It'll be cool as the process improves and they find more stable materials.

EDIT: Just saw your post mmp. Yes, that is correct. As I mentioned, they do currently color shift to orange as they age.

Even if it DID turn orange (which it may, i'm not debating that here), it may be cheap enough to replace every few years...and I'm sure they'll solve any issues it has in time.

Besides, it would pay for itself in power usage alone.

Yes they use low power, but thats because the organics cannot handle it. And because of this the brightness is much too low for tvs or flat panels... its currently better for a status display such as a phone or car instrument panel etc.

Don't stop there, let's make wallpaper out of the stuff Wife wants to move the furniture again which will mess up your TV view spot. Simply move the TV to another section of the wall via your control panel

Don't expect to see the cool stuff mentioned in here for a while. You'll continue to see more "small" OLED displays over the next several years such as in portable handheld devices with screens under 4". Don't expect to see monitors and stuff at reasonable prices for 4+ years due to yield and lifespan problems with larger sheets of OLED.
