    Kooldino, isn't the communism a political system?
    And socialism/capitalism - economical; I think.

    Because in modern China you still have communism and now also sort-of capitalism (I think...); and a country can't have two economical systems at the same time (I think...:P)

      There is Communism the economic theory, and Communism the government style. One does not imply the other, although the latter tries to masquerade as the former.

        you're right, Wombat. I've even checked the encyclopedia from 1966 (so it's strictly "communism/socialism are the way to go (and they eat half of pages:P)") and according to it communism as an economical system is the "higher stage" of socialism. Guess I must have missed that because basically in Poland we only had socialism (though I don't remember much of those days).

          I think XVid is the way to go. I've encoded the same movie with both and I found the Xvid to make less blocky videos than DivX5.02. Also note that some of the DivX features as GMC are not completely implemented.

          Some months ago the Xvid development was stropped since a company used their source to create a "new and revolutionary" commercial video codec without following the license.
          But now everything is ok and the xvid development is very active.

          They are near to reach a final release (1.0) so I guess proper installers will be made.

            There does seem to be some new stuff in 5.0.3. The original poster didn't list a lot of the stuff listed on the DivX Pro 5.x Version History page.

            New:
            • Support for interlaced video in both the encoder and decoder. If the content you're encoding is interlaced, you can either de-interlace the content so that it is progressive, or preserve the interlaced fields. Preserving the interlaced fields may sometimes result in better video quality during playback.
            • New de-ringing post-processing algorithm. The new algorithm improves the perceived video quality during playback. It is activated when the post-processing level is set to Level 6.
              Video Buffer Verifier (VBV) model (one and two pass encoding). The VBV ensures that the maximum peak bit rate never exceeds either the user's inputted "maximum peak" bit rate value or/and ensures that the encoded stream never violates the buffer of an MPEG-4 compliant decoder. This helps to prevent decoding failure in both hardware and software where memory may be limited yet compliant to the MPEG-4 standard as defined in ISO/IEC 14496-2:2001(E). In order for DivX video to be successfully delivered over a restricted channel in real time to a decoder, the encoder's rate control must ensure that the decoder's buffer is not violated. When this is done properly, then overflow and underflow will never occur and the encoder is said to be "VBV compliant." It makes no difference whether the video is encoded in 1-pass or many, in real-time or offline. It is the encoder's rate control that must ensure compliance. There are three main requirements of a VBV-compliant rate control algorithm, in order of importance:
              1. VBV compliance. When VBV parameters are specified (size, initial occupancy, channel characteristics) the rate control should avoid producing video that is in danger of violating the decoder's buffer. Bitstream stuffing may be used in extreme cases to prevent overflow in true CBR systems. Underflow must be prevented by increasing frame quantiser or by dropping frames.
              2. Target bitrate. We aim to meet the user's requirements as accurately as possible here. This is directly related to filesize.
              3. Good-looking video. Rate control should aim to produce the subjectively best quality video given other constraints. Consistency is important here as changes in quality are very noticeable and video is often judged by the worse quality segment in the whole sequence.
            • Nth Passâ„¢ encoding. Another new addition to the rate control arsenal, Nth Passâ„¢ encoding takes advantage of information available from previous analysis (or analyses) of the video sequence. Nth Pass encoding uses information garnered from previous passes through the video sequence, which can improve quality with each pass. There are four main steps to Nth Pass encoding:
              1. Analysis (the first pass)
              2. Map generation (where the results of analyses are processed)
                Strategy generation (strategist examines map of the video sequence and creates a strategy that will best achieve the three VBV RC requirements)
              3. In-loop nth pass rate control (uses information from the map and strategy to effect rate control that best fulfills the three requirements)
            • Support for DivX Certified Profiles. With the new DivX Certification program, DivXNetworks is enabling third parties to create "DivX Certified" products that are rigorously tested and fully compatible with the entire suite of DivX® video technologies. There are four levels of official DivX Certified video products: Handheld Video Devices, Portable Video Devices, Home Theater Video Devices and High Definition Video Devices. These levels quickly and clearly communicate what type and size of DivX video are supported on the certified device. Now, when you encode video, you have the option to force your video to comply with one of the DivX Certified Profiles to ensure that your video will play back properly on certified products.
            • DivX Decoder verification logo. There is a new semi-transparent DivX Logo that will appear by default for a few seconds any time you use the DivX decoder to watch a DivX video. This instantly lets you know you're watching a true DivX® video. You can turn the display of the logo on or off in the codec properties dialog.
            • New internal application programming interface (API). The internal API of the codec was changed to better accommodate integration with third party partners. This only affects you if you are a DivX licensee and are working directly with the DivX object code. The external API (e.g., DirectShow, etc.) remains unchanged.


            As far as I know, it doesn't cost anything to upgrade from a previous 5.x versions to the new 5.0.3.

                I guess most of the new features are in a beta stage, otherways they would have put a higher version number.
                If I remember correctly with 5.0.1 the advanced mpeg4 features GMC, QPEL... didn't worked like expected, creating many artifacts in the movie.

                  What Novdid said is what I wanted to say. (thanks Novdid) And I want to add that I hate this DivX company. DivX 3.11 Alpha was once so nice little underground proggie shared by all but then this "DivX Network" company comes along and turned this into a piece of capitalism shits and what? with ad-ware too? I mean come on, these people broke all the unwritten rules of the underground scene. The 3.11 days were so nice this truly underground stuff.

                          XViD is already better than DiVX (any version) and will dominate the codec scene in no time (it is already). There is just a bit more work involved compared to DiVX 3/5 where you just fire up GKnot and there you go.

                          Oh and on the communism thing: some sort of communism works as any kibbutz will show. these are however dedicated people, and only a bunch of them in one place.
                          no matrox, no matroxusers.

                            according to doom9.org's codec comparison (which is a few month old), xvid still has some problems, but compares quite well to divx. i downloaded the latest version, and will test in the next couple of days.

                            at the moment it looks as if divx will become more popular, they started releasing the first hifi systems...

                            the 5.03 version works much better for me than the last one, btw

                              Only problem is that with xvid they avoid the MPEG4 licensing by making it "for educational purposes only". While this is all and good when converting VHS tapes to a digital format, it isn't very helpful to companies who'd like to use MPEG-4 commercially. Hence we have DivX Networks and such.

                              That being said, XviD + OGG is where it's at. I recommend Koepi's builds when getting XviD binaries. Link can be found in his posts in Doom9's forums. It'll be nice when they get to a release that is stable enough with b-frames and all to be version 1.0.
