    Xvid should work for everyone.
If i have problems with Xvid, look for ffdshow in the properties.
Disable this filter if you have blocks/looking like melting ice-cream.
    then its very good.
Div5 works best for me, the Xvid still has some screw ups.
Don't use GMC or QP or stuff unless you have to, or you'll INTRODUCE blocks.
I have been testing encoding for years, trying out codecs and stuff, and so far, Div5 is DVD quality, no difference.

    Everyone has their preference.
Don't get me wrong, i have watched Signs in Xvid, and it was great. I'm just not sure Xvid can handle an explosive action film so well.....

Ogg ... mmmm. I got some nice hig bit-rate, VBR OGG files the other day and they sound fantastic! Much better than any MP3 I've heard.

The well made XviD files I've gotten have been vastly superior in quality than DivX. I've just had that installer problem and that's about it.

MPC is also good alternitive to MP3 (and presently a little better than OGG, though we will see what future brings) - too bad that at present it can't be used in videos.
