Is the association still there? The icon might have gotten corrupt.

Use TweakUI (from MS), Repair->rebuild icons.

      Thanks Wombat.
Yes the association is still there. Double-Click it will open it in IE.
      Let me try TweakUI

Egads, that's something very odd then. I've never seen TweakUI fail, and I've been using the repair icons/fonts since Win95.

Maybe the icon is there, but dislocated?

From a file foler, do Tools, Folder options, File types.

Go to the HTM association, click on advanced. Change Icon.

My IE icon comes from the file C:\WINDOWS\system32\url.dll

try changing it to a different icon.

maybe just extract the dll from the cd and replace - can't hurt.

Have you tried deleting the file (it is hidden):

                      c:\Documents and Settings\(profile name)\Local Settings\Application Data\IconCache.db ?

There seems to be much talk of shelliconcache holding the cached icons in XP (from googling around) - this is not true - it is now in the above file.

Not sure when it changed - maybe with SP1, so maybe TweakUI is trying to delete the wrong file.

-Paddy [MU], I already tried and it did not help. oh if those html and htm files are created by MS Frontpage then Frontpage's icon will display properly and that's the only one. (deleting those Frontpage's tags in the header of the html files will cause problem again)
-vwdrivrco, how do you extract the file from the CD?
-Rob(QG): I did try to delete that IconCache.db file but nothing's new.

I found this in the Registry:

This shows that Netscape is supposed to open these Html and htm files but actually IE will open them. Should I modify this key and how?

hmmm...... I dont have those "shellnew" keys
You could back up the keys really quick and delete them from the registry then see if that fixes it after a reboot

cant tell by your screenshots which ver of windows you have -- if its 95/8/me, then the file will be in a cab in the win9x folder on the cd, or i386 folder for nt/2k/xp. Didnt have any luck with a quick KB search about wich cab file url.dll is in though, sorry. I think you can extract from cabs with apps like winzp/ace/rar, etc..., also you can extract and replace files with msconfig. If not, open a dos box and type extract /?|more for all th options
