The IBM scsi thing, occurs when the drive is idle it will write some information to part of the drive logs..etc.

1 of my 40G 60GXP's just started dieing, it does a squeak click sound, but has also started generating smart ERROR's and remapping sectors like mad, The advanced DFT test failed so it has been RMA'd to hitachi....in singapore, it use to be local but since hitachi took over everything has changed

I recomend the speedfan program for monitering your hardrive's SMART status, it shows all the paremters and the temperature(if available), it can also be used to Overclock your FSB

My brothers quantum 30G died the other day as well, is it me or is HDD reliabilty going through the floor, never had a drive bought as new die on me for 10 years, now they are dropping like flies.

Its pretty obvious why drive manufacturers are moving to 1 year warranties, I will not buy a drive with less than a 3year warranty, that only leaves me with one choice.....WD SE drives

According to the maxtor site its 1 year warranty, but I have seen something on the net about buying an extended warranty, but none of the Australian retailers have 3year warranties. I would like to buy a maxtor but unless I can find 1 with a 3year warranty....

edit: to add, found 1 maxtor with 3 years, 160GB neptune 540(5400rpm drive)

Also found a seagate has options for 3year warrantys on almost all of there ATA drives (except serial ATA)

And of course there is the 8mb WD SE's with 3 years.

Stilll can't find an Australian source for samsung

I've seen that the DiamondMax is a 1yr, but the DiamondMax Plus are 3 years.

Nope.

Used to be that way but it's 1yr all round for ppl outside of the EU (2 yrs for EU citizens) and 2 years on the high end IDE models called MaxLine (250 and 320GB @ 5400rpm, 200 and 250 @7200rpm). Retail drives should also have 2 yrs warranty.

IBM/Hitachi will give you 3yrs, like Samsung and WD on their Special Edition drives (WDxxxJB).

I also found confirmation of the noise emitted by my drive, it is limitted to SCSI models. Personally, I've had a Western Digital and a Quantum Atlas 10K fail on me (Both didn't emit strange noises, but simply became inaccessible and both were replaced under warranty. The Quantum gave SMART errors, allowing me to back it up).

I'd be making backups of my files and looking into a new hard drive very quickly!!
you may be experiencing some head clashing, as for beeping, I'm clueless...hope it helps
