I keep hearing mentions of versions of XP that do not require product activation. Can a regular user get this and what is it called?

Or work at a University where the licensing agreement allows you use it at home.

Or, comply with the spirit of things, and download a file (quasi-legal) called "Corpfiles". This overwrites the WPA files of Professional WinXP with the corporate versions.
Then, of course, you need a valid corporate key... *sigh* which is probably NOT legal to obtain... unless you use the PERFECTLY legal keygen.
So... corpfiles.zip (or corpfiles.rar) and the XP Suite Keygen. (Which is TECHNICALLY called the XP Suite Key Discoverer and Tester).

OEM is another option. I haven't played with it much. You still have to have a valid OEM key, not easy to get - it's not the same as they key they give you.
And if you reinstall with the key they give you, you'll need to activate. The key they give you is just an ordinary pro key. Pain in the ass, I know.
