I have the MSI 845PE MAX2-FIR (thanks to a recommendation on here) at work running a 2.4G P4, 533FSB, 512MB PC2700, Parhelia 512, 80Gig WD800JB (8MB cache). This machine is the DBs. The mobo has everything except BT (although that is an option). One thing though, much of the I/O is on flying leads to the back panel, so if for some reason you needed to fill all those PCI slots you could be a little frustrated.

Thanks for the recommendation
I have to say, I have yet to see anybody speak badly about this motherboard. Though I think i'll be getting the non-firewire version, cause frankly I don't wanna pay the extra 40$ for it. I'll just suffer having to get a controller later when I find out I need it anyway
Guess it's off to the store to get me an MSI card and a Sapphire Radeon 9500 PRO... for which there is currently a one week delivery timeIf a kid asks where rain comes from, I think a cute thing to tell him is "God is crying." And if he asks why God is crying, another cute thing to tell him is "Probably because of something you did."

Tony (or anyone else who has this board)... one question...
How is the noise level of the chipset cooler on the MSI board? Noise is a big issue for me on this upgrade so it COULD swing my vote to another board if it's very noisy. Bit in any case, I should be able to cool it with the zalman northbridge heatsink right!?
ow and PS: I'm assuming the 'DB's' is a good thing!?

Hi Chris
The chipset HSF is barely audible in my system, but listening conditions are suboptimal so its hard to be objective. IIRC, its held on with a wire clip and should be easy to replace.
DBs = mutts nuts, so yes, its a good thing
I use the Zalman on the chipset on my home ASUS A7M266 - its great. Come with a mounting kit and thermal glue if you can't use that.
When I am back in the office (tomorrow), I'll have a close listen to the chipset HSF when everything else is off. I have the CoolerMAster P4 IHC-L71 silent heat pipe on the CPU and ISTR it was quieter than that

Dare I suggest a dual channel SIS 655 Gigabyte GA-8SQ800 or 8SQ800 Ultra (extra- Sil3112A serial ATA & Realtek 8100 10/100 LAN) ?
The prices here (and they are usually ~20% higher than US ones)are 115$ for the vanilla and 150$ for the Ultra version. Rather low compared to granite bay boards and pretty much on par with 845PE.

Well the Gigabyte board cost the same as the MSI here in denmark. I must admit it looks interesting though.... just wish I could find some user reviews. If a kid asks where rain comes from, I think a cute thing to tell him is "God is crying."
