There is no way that I'm going to let MS decide where and how to store my files.

sounds like a nightmare if the system is hacked.
Also, think of MP3s...there's a better example. Should I split my collection by first initial? Second initial? Artist? Year? SQL lets you do all of this (although ID3 tags don't split names into given/family).Meet Jasmine.

I have to admit that it sounds kinda neat, once I'm done with my sapare sys I might give it a try...I have a friend who has it, I'll probably get a copy form him. I'm still using my other three os's as my mains though!

Unix can put it in both of course, but just having keywords that you can search by (Unix+Graphics) would be nice.

Yup, symbolic links.
As for MP3s...well, I have my collection split up into 26 directories...A - Z because to view them all takes a while The point was just to show you what's possible - imagine having those features for all documents and files. I've got things like a funny folder, where all good images, videos and jokes go - but should they not also go in my images directory? Digital camera 'spools'? Can I view every picture I took on the 25th of December? What about pictures that had the pets in them? Obviously this takes work on the users part - adding meta-info for each document, but I like the sound of it. It would save me tidying up my hard drive constantly I usually end up searching for files anyway...

NTFS has symbolic links. however, i think you have to be using one of the server products to use it."And yet, after spending 20+ years trying to evolve the user interface into something better, what's the most powerful improvement Apple was able to make? They finally put a god damned shell back in." -jwz

Well, everyone stop being so paranoid. MS is hardly the first group to think of a DB-driven filesystem. IBM's been using it on their AS/400's for-****ing-ever.
If it's no slower than NTFS, it's a no-brainer.
At any rate, I wouldn't run this Longhorn for love nor money. It won't run jack schitt... the cool thing about the XP betas was that they ran all the win2k software, drivers were just a little bit of an issue.

Both 2k and XP has hard links.
They are just a pain in the ass to create without third-party programs.
I use the shell extention found at
http://vobsub.edensrising.com/shellext/shellext.html .
Just drag a file with the right mousebutton and select Make Hard Link Here.<font size="-4">User error:
Replace user and try again.

System 2: P4 2.0, Intel 845, 1024MB Generic RAM, 80GB WD, XP Pro, Promise Ultra133 TX2, GF3 Ti500. Resides in a neat Compaq case.
